Metered Dose Inhaler Products in which the active drug along with propellant is packed under pressure which is released upon application.

Metered Dose Inhaler A metered-dose inhaler is a device that delivers a specific amount of medication to the lungs,in this form of a short burst of aerosolized medicine that is usually self-administered bythe patient via inhalation . It is the most commonly used delivery system for treating asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and other respiratory diseases. Dute to metered valve exact amount of drug is delivered. Mainly for asthma,COPD & heart diseases.

Mechanism of MDI : A dispensing system which creates an aerosol mist of liquid particles is used with a can or bottle that contains a payload and propellant under pressure. When the container's metered valve is opened, the payload is forced out of a small hole and emerges as an aerosol or mist.

Mechanism of MDI A mask may be used for the therapeutic administration of a nebulized solution, humidity, or high airflow with oxygen enrichment. It has a large-bore inlet and an exhalation port.

CONTENTS OF THE METERED DOSE INHALERS

CONTAINERS Aluminum is used as material for preparing containers. Internally coated with epoxy resin. Having 20mm opening at the tip to receive metered valve. These are seamless.

METERED VALVE

ACTUATOR It is useful for the easy removal of the drug from the container. Used for applying drug on a particular site which we desired.

PROPELLENT Propellants in MDIs are liquefied compressed gases that are in the gaseous phase at atmospheric pressure, but form liquids when compressed. Commonly used propellants . Damage to ozone layer.

ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES Low dose Cheap Portable Fixed dose Efficient drug delivery Short treatment time Advantages:

Disadvantages Complex hand-breathing coordination Can not change drug concentration Whether the canister is used up is difficult to determine accurately Some patients may have reactions to the propellants If an accessory is not used, high orophyaryngeal impaction can be high and the drug is wasted
