Two methods of cultivations
are – Š
Seed propagation
Š
Vegetative propagation
Š
In the method of seed propagation
plants are raised from seeds and
such plants are known as seedlings.
Š
Methods of seed propagation are
1. Broad casting
2. Dibbling
3. Nursery bedding
In this method ,there are three types .
1.Natural methods
2. Artificial methods
3. Aseptic methods of
micropropagation or tissue culture.
Š
Sowing various parts of plants in well
prepared soil.
For eg–
Bulbs –squill
Corms –colchicum
Tubers –potato
Rhizomes –ginger
Runners –peppermint
Sucker –mint, banana
Š
The artificial methods of cultivation
are done by the following methods.
1.Cutting
2. Layering
3. Grafting
1. STEM CUTTING
Š
Soft wood cuttings - bearberry
Š
Semi hard wood cutting –camellia
Š
Hard cutting –orange, rose
2.ROOT CUTTING
Eg.Brahmi
Š
In this method, the branch is bent down and
covered with soil and is left still for a period.
Then the portion under the soil will develop
roots and grow into a new individual.
Š
In this method, the lower portion of the cut
plant is made to unite to upper portion of
another plant which is rooted to the soil.
Now the two plants adopt each other and
grow into a new plant.
Š
The different methods of Grafting are
1. Approach grafting
2. Scion grafting or time grafting
3. Budding/ bud grafting
