What is Millets? Millets are considered as “Miracle grains” as they require less water vis -a- vis other crops and can be grown in drought conditions. Millets are our traditional food but after green revolution become less popular among farmers and consumers as well. In rain fed areas, millets are major source of farmer’s income and hope.2023 is taken as International year of millets with aim of taking “Millets to millions”
From farmers… Studies have shown that millet was the earliest crop to be grown in the foothills of northern China almost 10,000 years ago. Turns out they were the perfect crop to be transported by nomadic hunter-gatherers to the Western world along a ‘hilly corridor’ where they became part of organised farming. Thus, they were the missing piece in the puzzle of transition of prehistoric humans from hunter-gatherers to farmers
How the Millet was lost…? After colonizers arrived in India they manipulated agricultural production to suit their business interests. They sourced spices, cotton, indigo and other commercial crops from India and sold them in Europe. And so from the 17th to the 20th century, the productivity of food grains including millets did not rise in India. Millets almost disappeared from large parts of India hereafter
