• 1.Porifera
• Sponges-are aquatic animal, most of
them are marine, live attached to sand
or rocks
• Body is perforated by pores and
supported by small needles called
spicules
• Have an internal cavity with an upper
hole called osculum
• Filtering animals, they feed filtering
water and retaining food particles
• Reproduce sexually or asexually (
fragmentation or budding)
The sponges or poriferans (from Latin porus "pore" and
ferre "to bear") are animals of the phylum Porifera.

2 bodyforms
• Swimming medusae- an umbrella shape floating freely
• -Sessile polyps-a bag phase fixed to the ground
• - have mouth with tentacles with stinging cells called
cnidocystes and gastrovascular cavity
• -reproduce sexually or sexually ( budding )
• All cnidarians possess stinging cells called
nematocysts, which can be used for both protection
and helping them to catch food. Cnidarians are
carnivores, and some can also consume plant matter.
They catch their food using their nematocysts or
through filter feeding .
Edible Jelly Fish
• Jellyfish in many ways, including shredded or sliced
thinly and tossed with sugar, soy sauce, oil, and vinegar
for a salad.
• It can also be cut into noodles, boiled, and served
mixed with vegetables or meat. Prepared jellyfish has a
delicate flavor and surprisingly crunchy texture.

common ones consumed in China, Japan and Korea.

Mollusc
• The study of Mollusca is called Malacology. They are sluggish invertebrates,
with a thin fleshy envelope or mantle covering the visceral organs.
• The term Mollusca was derived from the term given by Aristotle to cuttlefish.
Mollusc means soft.
• These organisms are found in the terrestrial as well as in deep seas. Their size
ranges from microscopic organisms to organisms 20 metres long.
• They play a very important role in the lives of humans. They are a source of
jewellery as well as food. Natural pearls are formed within these
molluscs.
• The bivalve molluscs are used as bioindicators in the marine and freshwater
environments. But few of them such as snails and slugs are pests.
• Molluscs are the largest marine phylum comprising about 23% of all named
marine organism ,highly diverse in size and in anatomical structures and in
behavior

The shells of abalones are low and flat, and inside
is a thick layer of nacre (mother-of-pearl), which
has been used in Korean lacquerware and
furniture for centuries.
The flesh is considered a delicacy in Korea, raw or
cooked. Good quality, fresh live abalone can be
expensive and hard to find. Frozen abalone is more
readily available and can even be found in Korean
grocery stores in North America. In Korea, live
abalone is farmed and also caught wild by divers

Cyprea Mauritiana - Humpback
Cowrie - 2 to 4 Inches
Philippine Local Name:
Cyprea Mauritiana Common
Name: Humpback Cowrie
Scientific Name: Mauritia
The diwal or angel wings clam (Pholas orientalis) is a highly
seasonal shellfish in the Philippines and prized for its delectable and
succulent taste. Diwal thrives in the sandymuddy bottoms of inter tidal
areas in coastal waters of Iloilo, Capiz and Negros Occidental.

Japanese pearl oyster Pinctada
fucata
Pinctada maxima is a species of pearl oyster, a marine bivalve mollusk in the
family Pteriidae, the pearl oysters. There are two different color varieties: the
Whitelipped oyster and the Gold-lipped oyster.
These bivalves are the largest pearl oysters in the world. They have a very strong inner
shell layer composed of nacre, also known as "mother of pearl". They are important in
the cultured pearl industry as they are used to produce South Sea pearls.
Known also as the South Sea Pearl or Philippine Pearl, it was declared by Philippine
President Fidel Ramos as the national gem in 1996 through Proclamation No. 905.[1]
This is also featured at the reverse side of the Philippine 1,000-peso bill.
Superfamily: Pectinoidea
Family: Pectinidae
Species: Amusium Pleuronectes ( Habe 1964 )
Common Name: Asian Moon Scallop
Habitat: Offshore
Origin: Malaysia
The “Conus Gloriamaris” is among the
12,000 species of seashells found in the
Philippines and is considered the rarest
and possibly the most expensive...
The name Nautilus is derived from the Latin word
meaning sailor
Nautiluses are one of the most beautiful types of
seashells in the word.
This rare and intriguing living fossil appeared nearly 500
million years ago, and can be found living on deep slopes
and coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific.

Crayfish, of which our own Northern Crayfish (Orconectes
virilis) is one of about 500 species worldwide, are crustaceans
related to copepods, barnacles, crabs, shrimps, lobsters, etc.

Genus: Orconectes, Species: virilis)
AXONAMICAL POSITION OF MUD CRABS
Phylum: Arthropod
Class: Crustaceans
Order: Decapods
Family: Portunidae
Genus: Scylla
Species: serrata
Among the marine edible crustaceans, crabs, rank third by
virtue of their delicacy and demand for human consumption. In
India, 600 hundred species of crabs are available, of which only
two species are used to the culture. (Scylla serreta and Scylla
tranquebarica). S. serreta is smaller and S. tranquebarica are
larger species. Scylla species are generally known as mud crabs
or green crabs.
In malayalam they are known as “patcha njandu, kuzhi njandu
and kattu njandu”.
Portunus pelagicus (Pacific Blue Swimming
Crab) is a species of decapods in the family
swimming crabs. They rely on drag powered
swimming to move around.
1: Barnacles are crustaceans.
Although they were once thought to be related to snails, it turns out
that barnacles are actually related to crabs. If you look at the animal
inside the hard plates, it is possible to recognize their crab-like body
plan.
2: They eat with their legs.
Because barnacles are sessile animals, they have no need for the
walking legs that many of their crustacean relatives possess.
Minor Fishery Productts
• .ECHINODERMS-marine animals
• Have hard skeleton, generally with spines
• Have an ambulacral system to move around
• Reproduce sexually or by fragmentation like starfish
• Examples;strfish, sea urchins,seacucumber, brittle star
• Characteristics of Echinodermata
• They have a star-like appearance and are spherical or
elongated.
• They are exclusively marine animals.
• The organisms are spiny-skinned.
• They exhibit organ system level of organization. ...
• They are triploblastic and have a coelomic cavity.
• The skeleton is made up of calcium carbonate.
Sea urchins have pentaradial symmetry. Skeleton
made of calcite.
Typically, the body is ovoid shaped with spines;
the upper surface is domed and the underside is
flattened. The mouth has a complex structure
made up of five calcium carbonate plates.
Sea urchins are spiny, globular echinoderms in the class Echinoidea. ... Each of these areas consists of two
rows of plates, What is the edible part of sea urchin?
Gonads
The only parts of the urchin that are edible are the gonads, the
reproductive organs that are so highly prized on the plate. The
texture
of sea urchin is creamy and custardy in the beginning of the season
and grows firmer and more granular as the roe develops in
preparation for spawning.
In our country, the most common sea urchin species is Tripneustes
grantilla locally known as swaki, santol-santolan, maritangtang and
kuden-kuden and found in the Ilocos and Bicol regions.
-are about 950 species of sea urchins that inhabit a wide range of
depth zones in all climates across the world's oceans.Nov 27, 2018
The live sea urchin is sold at P60. 00 – P70. 00 per kilogram while the fresh chilled sea urchin roe fetches
P1000. 00 – P1200.
