INTRODUCTION The minor disorders are most common among newborns, neglecting the minor health problem is the one of the factor contributing to the newborn mortality rate. In India most the mothers are not aware of management regarding minor disorders of newborn (vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, physiological jaundice, conjunctivitis, umbilical cord infection, pseudo menstruation, breast engorgement, and skin rashes).
DE F INITION OF TERM Newborn Or Neonate From Birth To Till 28 Days The Baby Is Called Newborn Our Neonate. Minor Ailments Minor Ailments are a physical c ondition i n w hich there is a disturbance of n ormal f unctioning.
STUFFY NOSE Lead to mouth b r e a t h ing a n d e x c e ss i ve air swallowing. Treatment : nostrils cleaned by cotton wool soak e d with normal saline and nasal spray or drops can use.
STICKY EYES Due to chemical irritant or bacterial infections of staphylocolous Treatment: erythromycin 0.5% ointment is used every 6 hours for 7-10 days.
SKIN RASHES Small patches usually to na p kin ar e as m a y in v o l ved gr o in, axil l a, f ac e , l e gs and back. Treatment: frequent care
OR A L TH R USH It is fungal infection characterized by white patches in the mouth and tongue. Treatment: S hould be treated mothers vaginal candidiasis during an t en a t al p e riod. Af t er each feed clean the baby’s mouth and mothers nipple also.
NEO N A T AL JAUN D ICE It is a yellow color of skin usually appearing on the f ace, c hes t , abdomen, and legs. Tre a tment : Usual l y correct itself in a few days. If not then baby should keep on photo therapy.
ENGORGED BREAST Due to maternal hormones breast become swollen Treatment: N o treatment required, don’t squeeze the breast.
V OMITING Due to faulty techniques of feeding. Stenosis, intestinal obstructions, infections like URTI , Treatment: proper techniques of breast feeding in proper position. Avoid bottle feeding.
DIARROHEA Due to intake of m a t e rnal medicin e s such as ampicillin any other drugs. Put on exclusive breast feed. Avoid bottle feeding maintain hygiene Wash nipple after each feed.
Due to insufficient fluid or milk intake. More common in bottle fed infant. Management: milk of ma g ne s ia one te a s p oon twice a daily. Ap p l y lubricant over anal region. NEONATAL CONSTIPATION
Due to frequent loose stools, Poor hygiene. Treatment: change position from time to time , Put b aby in l a teral or prone position, App l y c o c o n u t o i l. SORE BUTTOCK
HICCUPS & SNEEZING Hiccups occur immediately after a feed due to stomach distension and irritation of diaphragm. Sneezing occurs due to irritation of nostrils. It should be sucked out by Mucous sucker. Proper burping should be encourage.
FEVER
FAILURE TO PASS URINE & MECONIUM Healthy baby must pass urine & meconium within 24hrs. Meconium is first stool of baby which is dark green in color. If baby doesn’t pass then immediate inform doctor.
EXCESSIVE CRYING Due to hungry or discomfort, f u ll b l a d d er, c onstipation, i nsect bites. Treatment: Frequently feed the baby . Check for urine and motion. Cover the baby from insects
EXCESSIVE SLEEPINESS Due to sedation given to mot h er a t time of labour. Some baby sleeps after a few suck. The baby should be kept arouse during feed by tickling on the soles and behind the ears.
CAPUT SUCCEDANEUM Boggy diffuse edematous swelling of soft tissues of scalp over the presenting part. Usually come to normal in few days.
UMBILICAL GR A NULOMA Ar e a ar o und umbilic a l co r d. B e com e s moist and m a y swel l , oozing and bleeding may occur too. Treatment : Treat with silver nitrate
PINK EYE Conjunctivitis or pink ey e s h a ve ye l low discharge along with red irritated looking eyes . Treatment: Cold compresses to reduce swelling. Apply antibiotic eye drop or ointment
BABY ACNE
Clean baby's face each day. Wash baby's face daily with warm water. Alternate between using plain water one day and water with a mild, moisturizing facial soap the next. Dry baby's face gently. Pat baby's skin dry. Don't pinch or scrub the acne. It may cause more irritation or an infection. Avoid using lotions, ointments or oils. Such products likely will make baby acne worse.
