MITRAL VALVE PROLAPSE BY, SANDRA MARIYA

DEFINITION Mitral valve prolapse is a valvular heart disease charecterised by the displacement of an abnormally thickend mitral valve leaflet into the left atrium during systole .It is the primary form of myxomatous degeneration of the valve . It is also known as , floppy mitral valve , systolic click murmur syndrome , billowing mitral leaflet , barlow’s syndrome Mitral valve prolapse sometimes causes blood to leak backward across the valve , a condition called mitral valve regurgitation .

MITRAL VALVE PROLAPSE AND REGURGITATION The mitral valve separates the two chambers (atrium and ventricle) of left side of the heart . In mitral valve prolapse , the leaflets of the mitral valve bulge ( prolapse ) into left atrium like a parachute during the heart’s contraction .Sometimes mitral valve prolapse causes blood to leak into the atrium from the ventricle, which is called mitral valve regurgitation . usually MVP isn’t life-threatening and doesn’t require treatment or lifestyle changes. But some people may need medication or surgery, especially if the prolapse cause severe regurgitation .

SYMPTOMS A rising or irregular heartbeat(arrhythmia) Dizziness or lightheadedness Shortness of breath especially during exercise or when lying flat Fatigue Anxiety Orthostatic hypotension Chest pain Heart palpitations Migraines Panic attacks Exercise intolerance

RISK FACTORS Mitral valve prolapse can develop in any person at any age. Serious symptoms of mitral valve prolapse tend to occure most often in men older than 50 . Ebstein anomaly Ehlers- danlos syndrome Graves’ disease Marfan syndrome Muscular dystrophy Scoliosis

COMPLICATIONS Mitral valve regurgitation Arrhythmias Infective endocarditis Transient ischemic event

DIAGNOSTIC EVALUATION Physical examination Echocardiography Electrocardiography Chest x-ray Cardiac catheterization

MANAGEMENT AND TREATMENT Beta-blockers to manage symptoms like dizziness or heart palpitations Anticoagulants if you have atrial fibrillation or a past history of stroke Mitral valve repair Mitral valve replacement
