Introduction to Ergonomics
•Ergonomics is a multidisciplinary science involving fields that have
information about people
•psychology, anthropometry, biomechanics, anatomy, physiologyetc.
•It involves studying human characteristics, capabilities, and limitations
and applying this information to design and evaluate the equipment and
systems that people use.
•Basic Goal of ergonomics
•design equipment such that -the best possible fit between the users (drivers) and
the equipment (vehicle)
•Considering users’ safety, comfort, convenience, performance, and improved
efficiency.
Introduction to Ergonomics
Physical Ergonomics
•Human anatomy
•Biomechanics
•Physiology
•Repetitive

Cognitive Ergonomics
•Mental Process
•Perception
•Reasoning

Introduction to Ergonomics
•Ergonomics Research Studies
Descriptive research Experimental research Evaluative research
•Data describing human
characteristics of different
populations
•Experiments conducted to
determine the effects of
different combinations of
independent variables on
certain response variables
•Comparisons of user
performancein using
different designs
e.g.
•Anthropometric measurements
and their distributions.
e.g.
•Effects of different vehicle
parameters on comfort ratings or
performance measure in vehicle
entry
e.g.
•Selecting best possible design
out of suggested designs
based on preference of drivers
/ passengers
Introduction to Ergonomics
•Why ergonomics in necessary for automotive design
1.Enhance user specifications –Functionality, usability & aesthetics
2.Make system more user compatible, efficient and safer.
3.Accommodate wide range of population
4.Helps in redaction of physical and cognitive load.
5.Helps to meet all pre selected ergonomic standards.

•When designing a vehicle, the ergonomics engineers must make sure that most
users in the population can perform the tasks associated with the vehicle.
