Situation 1 Your friends invited you to a birthday party. What will you tell your mother in order to go to the party?

Situation 2 In the middle of the class, you suddenly felt the need to go to the comfort room. What will you say to your teacher?

Situation 3 Your sister wants to borrow your shirt. What will you tell her if you are allowing her to borrow your shirt?

Lesson Objectives At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to: 1. Define and identify modal of permission 2. Show cooperation by participating in class discussion and group activities 3. Construct sentences using appropriate modal verbs of permission

Modal verbs are verbs that provide additional and specific meaning to the main verb of the sentence.

Permission is an act of giving consent or authorization.

In stating permission , modals to be used include can, could, and may .

Can is used to ask for and give permission to act in the present.

Examples: 1. Can you give me your number ? 2. Can you help me with this ? 3. I can do it if you want me to .

Could expresses the possibility of doing something and it can also be used to ask or give permission to act in the future.

Examples: 1. I could possibly ask my mom to cook it for us . 2. Could I interview the mayor tonight? 3. Could you lend me your book later?

May is the most polite and formal modal used in asking and giving permission.

Examples: 1. Medical practitioners affected by Covid-19 may now claim their financial support from the government . 2. Teachers may now distribute the modules to the learners . 3. May I borrow your book, please?
