ORIGIN OF FRANCHISING

Most business historians date the beginning of franchising as a concept to the Middle Ages, when feudal lords initiated the practice of selling to others the rights to collect taxes and operate markets on their behalf. What is the origin of franchising?

The idea has basically been around since the Middle Ages. It was then that the very elementary franchise system was established. Governments allowed high ranking officials a license to maintain order and assess taxes. They, in turn, allowed citizens to pay a royalty to perform certain businesses.

Franchise  comes from the French verb franchir , meaning “to free,” itself from franc meaning “free.”  Franc is the origin of the English word frank (“marked by free, forthright, and sincere expression”), but it originally referred to the West Germanic tribe of people who lived in what is now France in the early Middle Age. What is the origin of the name franchise?

Benjamin Franklin is often credited as one of the pioneers of franchising in America, having established the first franchise-like agreement in 1731 through a printing business partnership. Who is the father of the franchise?

Isaac Singer The 1800s: The First Franchise In 1851, Isaac Singer became the first American franchise owner, when he enlisted traveling salesmen and gave them the branded selling rights to his sewing machines. In the 1890s, Coca-Cola gave franchising rights to businessmen. Who was the first franchise owner?

Isaac Singer Some call Martha Matilda Harper the founder of the modern franchising concept. Others lay that title at the feet of Isaac Singer, who was born four decades before her and built a formidable network of sewing machine salespeople across North America and Europe. Who really invented franchising?

Samie Lim President, Canadian Tourism & Hospitality Institute Known as the “Father of Franchising in the Philippines”. Samie Lim is acknowledged as the heart, mind and soul- the prime mover in Philippine franchising who was instrumental in the growth of the sector today and in transforming the Philippines as one of the leading franchise hub in Asia. Who is the father of Philippine franchising?

Franchising has been in the Philippines for 112 years, with the entry of Singer Sewing Machine in 1910, which introduced product distributorship. Numerous companies embraced this concept as their vehicle for business expansion over the years. How franchising started in the Philippines?
