The Role of Artists in Contemporary Time Living in a culturally diverse, technologically advanced, and globally influenced world, contemporary artists are the ones who give voice and reflect the varied and ever-changing cultural identities, beliefs, and values Moreover, artists reflect on their environment or surroundings and preserve and record history and experiences. Artists can also inspire people and strengthen their will to take action and create significant environmental, social, cultural, or political contributions.

Order of National Artist (ONA) One of the awards and privileges that are given to artists is the Order of National Artist (ONA). The ONA is the highest honorary title given to artists.
Order of National Artist (ONA) Being a National Artist is both a privilege and a responsibility as one becomes a role model that people look up to and treated with respect similar to high-ranking officials. As they are recognized for their significant contributions, artists are also expected to inspire and motivate others to contribute to the promotion and preservation of artworks and other significant artifacts that showcase our cultural traditions and help shape our Filipino identity.
The Order of National Artist The Order of National Artists ( Order ng Pambansang Alagad ng Sining ) is the highest national recognition given to Filipino individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of Philippine arts, namely: Music, Dance, Theater, Visual Arts, Literature, Film, Broadcast Arts, and Architecture and Allied Arts
The Order of National Artist The Order of National Artist was established under the Presidential Proclamation No. 1001 s. 1972 . The order is jointly administered by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the Cultural Center of the Philippines and conferred by the President of the Philippines upon recommendation by both institutions.
The Order of National Artist The Order of National Artist aims to recognize the following: Filipino artists who have significantly contributed to the cultural heritage of our country. Filipino artists who have made artistic accomplishments at their highest level showcasing creative expressions that significantly contribute to the development of national cultural identity. Filipino artists who have dedicated their lives to creating works that paved the way for future generations of Filipino artists.
The Insignia of the ONA The insignia of the ONA is one of the honors and privileges that an awardee receives. You can see in the insignia a silver gilt bronze and circular links portraying various arts in the Grand Collar.
The Insignia of the ONA An eight-pointed sunburst conventionally suspended from a sampaguita wreath with green and white enamel is one of its features. The medallion displays a representation of the Philippine flag with its red-, white-, and blue-colored central badge.
The Insignia of the ONA Embedded on each are three stylized letter K, which stands for KKK and reflects the CCP’s motto coined by the CCP’s founder, Imelda Romualdez Marcos: Katotohanan , Kabutihan , at Kagandahan (truth, good, and beautiful).

Criteria for a National Artist The following are the criteria for selecting the ONA: 1.Artists who are Filipino citizens as well as those who died after the establishment of the award in 1972. 2.Artists who have significantly contributed in building a Filipino sense of nationhood through their works’ content and form.
Criteria for a National Artist 3. Artists who earned a distinction by pioneering a mode of creative expression or style that made an impact on succeeding generations of artists. 4. Artists who have consistently displayed excellence in their art form and have created a substantial and significant body of works enriching the artistic expression or style.
Criteria for a National Artist 5.Artists who enjoy broad acceptance through Gawad CCP para sa Sining, CCP Thirteen Artists Award, and NCCA Haraya Awards (Alab and Dangal) or other prestigious national and/or international recognition Received critical acclaim and/or reviews of their artworks and other creative expressions Respect and esteem from peers, fellow artists, and community members
Honors and Privileges of the National Artists 1. The rank and title of National Artist, as proclaimed by the President of the Philippines; 2. The National Artist gold-plated medallion minted by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) and citation;
Honors and Privileges of the National Artists Lifetime emolument and material and physical benefits comparable in value to those received by the highest officers of the land such as: A minimum cash award of Two Hundred Thousand Pesos (P200,000.00), net of taxes for living awardees. A minimum cash award of One Hundred Fifty Thousand Pesos (P150,000.00), net of taxes for posthumous awardees, payable to legal heir/s.
Honors and Privileges of the National Artists A minimum lifetime personal monthly stipend of Thirty Thousand Pesos (P30,000.00). Life insurance coverage for Awardees who are still insurable; A state funeral, the arrangements for and the expenses of which shall be borne by the government, upon the death of the National Artist
