Juan Felipe de Jesús Nakpil was born on May 26, 1899, in Quiapo, Manila.
He was the sonJuan of Julio Nakpil, a composer and revolutionary during
the Katipunan, and Gregoria de Jesús, the “Lakambini of the Katipunan”
and widow of Andres Bonifacio. Growing up in a household surrounded
by patriotism, Nakpil developed a deep love for Filipino culture and
identity.He finished his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering at the
University of Kansas in 1922 and later studied Architecture at Harvard
University in 1926. When he returned to the Philippines, he became one
of the first modernist architects in the country.
Style and Technique
Nakpil’s architectural style is recognized for its modernist approach,
combining contemporary design with Filipino cultural elements. He
emphasized functionality and simplicity, while also highlighting historical
