Monocot and dicot What are seeds?

Compare characteristics of different plants seeds. Explain the growth process of monocot seeds compared to a dicot seed.

Identify the parts of the seed.

What are the three basic parts of a seed?

How about the parts of the embryo plant?

When do we say that a seed or seedling is a monocot or dicot?

What is a seed? A  seed is an embryonic plant enclosed in a protective outer covering, along with a food reserve. The formation of the seed is a part of the process of reproduction in seed plants, the spermatophytes, including the gymnosperm and angiosperm plants.

A Seed is primarily of two types. The two types are:  Monocotyledonous Seed .  Dicotyledonous Seed .

Monocotyledonous Seed .  A monocotyledonous seed  has embryos that possess only one large cotyledon called scutellum . Generally, the scutellum is shaped like a shield. It is located laterally towards the side of the embryo axis. Wheat, corn, millet, lilies, sugarcane, banana, onions, ginger, palm, and bamboo.

Dicotyledonous Seed . Dicot seeds(Dicotyledons) are the  seeds which have two embryonic leaves and cotyledons . They are one of the two groups into which all the flowering plants were divided. Examples of Dicot Seeds: Bitter gourd seeds, Castor seeds, Mango seeds, Neem Seeds, Night Jasmine seeds, Papaya seeds and Tamarind seeds.

Exploring Monocots and Dicots .

After germination, which seedlings or germinated seeds are monocot or dicot? When a monocot seed germinates, it produces a single leaf. It is usually long and narrow, like the adult leaf. Even when it is quite a round shape, there is only one seed leaf in a monocot.  When a dicot germinates, it produces two seed leaves .
