Research, the road less taken
at times, not taken
The word research
was coined from
the French word
“cerhier” which
means seek. The
prefix “re”
means repeat.
Research is to produce
knowledge through
inquiry and discovery
1. Laughter boosts brain
function.
2. Those who find their purpose
in life have lower risk of death.
3. Choosing a complex career
protects your brain later in life.
Why do people cry when
they hear the word
goodbye in a love song?
Research usually begins with a question.
Is the research significant in relation to the
current problems of the world?
Will the research build upon existing
knowledge about the phenomenon?
Will the research apply, test, or develop
theories?

Importance of Research
Describes what is happening
around us
Predicts what will happen
Evaluates what happened
Helps solve problems

is 100 degrees Celsius at 1

Your favorite song is your
favorite because you
associate an emotional
event with it.
Singing reduces feelings of
anxiety and depression
Wanted touch reduces
stress and makes you
happier
Being in love is only a
chemical reaction of the
brain and has no relation
with the functioning of the
heart
Research is a scientific investigation
of phenomena which includes
collection, presentation, analysis
and interpretation of facts that
aligns an individual’s speculation
with reality.

Characteristics of Researcher

2.Prudent
3.Healthy Criticism
4.Intellectual Honesty
Identify the problem
Review the literature
Clarify the purpose of the study
Clearly define the variables and important terms
Design a sound methodology
Develop a research tool or instrument
Collect the data
Analyze and interpret the data
Draw conclusions and recommendations
Communicate the results
Step Example
Identify the problem
or question
Childhood Obesity
Review the literatureLook for similar studies that
have been conducted
Clarify the problemThe purpose of the study id to
determine if walking 10,000
steps a day for three days a
week improves a person’s
health
Clearly define the
terms
This is done so that the readers
understand exactly what each
term means
Step Example
Define the population Children who are 10 to 12 years
old
Develop the
instrumentation plan
Data will be collected on the
variables at the beginning of the
program and at the conclusion of
the study.
Collect Data Collect the data on the specified
variables at the first and the last
session of the program.
Analyze the data Compare data gathered from each
participant. The first
measurements are compared to
the second measurements to see if
there is a difference. Report the
results and the differences if there
are any
