About This Presentation

Describes the morphology of Human Deciduous Mandibular Molar teeth

Slide Content

Dr. Rooban Thavarajah
Deciduous Dentition
Mandibular Molar

Dr. Rooban Thavarajah
Mandibular First Molar
No resemblance to any teeth; primitive

Buccal
Mesial outline straight -little
constriction @ cervix
Distal outline converges;
short distal side
No DG but a depression
seen
Large MB cusp
 Mesial outline is flat
Distal is more convex to
buccal cusp
Bifurcation is close to
cervical line
Dr. Rooban Thavarajah

Dr. Rooban Thavarajah
Lingual
Crown, root converge lingually on mesial
surface, opposite on distal surface.
DL cusp rounded
ML – sharp and long
MMR well developed

Dr. Rooban Thavarajah
Proximal
No resemblance to any teeth
Mesial is extremely bulbous in cervical 1/3
Distal is more uniform

Dr. Rooban Thavarajah
Occlusal
Rhomboidal in shape
MB line angle prominent
ML cusp – largest, well formed, widest
Mesiobuccal ridge pronounced
May have short buccal groove, Lingual groove
Central groove
3 pits (in 2 fossa)

Dr. Rooban Thavarajah
Roots
2 roots bifurcated
Flat and broad flared
Mesial root has a longitudinal groove
Distal root is shorter and thinner

Dr. Rooban Thavarajah

Dr. Rooban Thavarajah
Mandibular Second Molar
Similar to 1
st
permanent molar but small
Typical constriction at cervix
5 cusps MB, DB, D ML, DL
Mesiobuccal and Distobuccal groove
separates the 3 buccal cusp
Lingual groove separates the 2 lingual
cusps
Buccal cusps equal in size ~ lingual cusps

Dr. Rooban Thavarajah
Proximal
Similar to permanent molar
Roots are twice as long as the crown
Long, slender and flared
Mesial root may have a longitudinal groove
Distal root –no groove
Occlusal
Rectangular in shape
