MOTOR ENCLOSURE

Motor Enclosures An enclosure protects a motor from contaminants in the environment in which it is operating. In addition, the type of enclosure affects the cooling of the motor. Enclosures are categorized as either open or totally enclosed, and there are different types of enclosures within each category .

Types of Induction Motor Enclosure 1. Open Drip Proof (ODP) 2. Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled (TEFC) 3. Totally Enclosed Non-Ventilated (TENV) 4. Totally Enclosed Blower Cooled (TEBC) 5. Totally Enclosed Air Over (TEAO) 6. Totally Enclosed Wash Down (TEWD) 7. Explosion Proof Enclosures (XP)

Important role of Enclosure The enclosure of the motor must protect the windings, bearings, and other mechanical parts from moisture, chemicals ,  mechanical damage  and abrasion from dirt .

1. Open Drip Proof (ODP) Cooling air flows inside motor directly from the outside using fans built inside the motor. Water dripping at up to a 15 degree angle from vertical will not enter the motor. Suitable for most indoor or protected areas which have relatively clean environments.

- indoor applications in relatively clean, dry locations.

2 . Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled (TEFC) This enclosure type has an external fan which blows air across the motor frame's external cooling fins. The air inside the motor recirculates and is cooled by heat transfer through the frame.

- pumps - fans - compressors

3 . Totally Enclosed Non-Ventilated (TENV) Similar to TEFC but the motor is designed with a low enough temperature rise so that an external fan is not required for cooling, or duty is limited so the motor does not overheat.

- Textile - Automotive - Foundry - Paper mills

4. Totally Enclosed Blower Cooled (TEBC) T otally enclosed motor constructed with a fan on the opposite end of motor shaft designed to blow cooling air over the motor. The fan is powered separately from the motor to provide constant air flow whether the motor is running or stopped.

- Farm Duty Motors - Rock Crusher Motors - Pool Pump Motors

5. Totally Enclosed Air Over (TEAO) This enclosure is similar to TEFC but does not have its own cooling fan, rather it sits in an airstream such as in a ventilating duct. Most often, this motor is powering a direct-coupled fan and is mounted right in the air duct that it is blowing air through.

- Refrigeration Duty - Air Conditioner - Condenser Fan

6. Totally Enclosed Wash Down (TEWD) Wash down motors are designed to withstand high pressure wash-downs or other high humidity or wet environments. Can be used in extremely moist or chemical environments, but are not designed for hazardous locations .

- food processing and packaging - pharmaceuticals

7. Explosion Proof Enclosures (XP) Explosion-proof motors are intended for use in hazardous locations, which are classified according to the nature of the hazard.

- atmospheres containing gases or hazardous dusts - chemical plants - in oil industry - in gas works - in wood and plastic processing industry or in agriculture

TEFC XP Explosion Proof similar design and appearance with the TEFC type but for XP enclosures are made from cast iron material to stand from hazardous impacts .

Explosion Proof are classified in specific categories (Class, Group, and Division)  depending upon the application and environment . Class 1 indicates combustible gases or vapors . Class 2 indicates combustible or electrically conductive dust. Class 3 indicates easily ignitable fibers or flyings .
