M arine P roducts E xport D evelopment A uthority After Independence, Seafood industry needed an organization to lead the market promotion of Indian seafood products abroad and utilize fishery potential. This need has led to the formation of the Marine Products Export Promotion Council ( MPEPC ) by the Government of India in September 1961.
Promoting & developing export of marine products and seafood export promotion has become the mission of MPEPC. The port of Cochin, which handled about 60% of seafood exports in those days made Cochin the ideal home for the MPEPC to set up its base. But in 1972 MPEDA was constituted under the Marine Products Export Development Authority Act 1972 (No. 13 of 1972) and replaced MPEPC.
The marine products permitted to be exported are classified into 8 categories 1. Frozen Marine Products 2. Canned Marine Products
3. Freeze Dried Marine Products 4. Live Marine Products
7. Ornamental Fish 8. Others (Edible) / (Non-Edible) Shark leather Bag
Organizational Structure
Structure of MPEDA Functions under the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India Acts as a coordinating agency with different Central and State Government establishments engaged in fishery production and allied activities. The functions of MPEDA are guided by an Authority and 3 Standing Committees of MPEDA. They are; Executive Committee Technical Committee Export Promotion Committee.
Structure of MPEDA The MPEDA’s activities are implemented through the plan schemes of the Authority under six major heads. They are; Market Promotion Capture Fisheries Culture Fisheries Processing infrastructure & value addition Quality control Research and development
Roles and responsibilities of MPEDA Promotion of Indian marine products in overseas markets. Registration of infrastructural facilities for seafood export trade. Collection and dissemination of trade information. Promotion of aquaculture for improving export through New farm development Hatchery development Diversification of species Upgradation of technology
Roles and responsibilities of MPEDA Promotion of deep-sea fishing projects through introducing new technology or equipment for fishing. Implementation of schemes for better preservation and modernized processing. Market promotional activities and publicity. Conducting inspection on marine products for maintaining the quality of seafood that are marketed overseas. Conduct training programs to fishermen.

Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Aquaculture ( RGCA ) It is the R & D arm of MPEDA The no profit no loss motto has made breakthroughs not only in culture technologies of Shrimps but also in diversified species such as Seabass, Groupers, Mud Crab etc. Recent Projects Marine Finfish Hatchery Project @ Vizhinjam, Kerala. Grouper Project @ Andaman & Nicobar islands. Mud Crab Project @ Thoduvai, Tamil Nadu.
Network for Fish Quality Management and Sustainable Fishing ( NETFISH ) An extension arm of MPEDA The major objectives are to empower fisheries sector by imparting knowledge to fishermen, processing workers, & technicians on fish quality management, conservation of fish resources and sustainable fishing. National Centre for Sustainable Aquaculture (NaCSA) An extension arm of MPEDA An outreach organization of MPEDA to provide technical support to the primary aquaculture societies. Main objectives of NaCSA Promote science-based management to improve aquaculture sustainability. Empower and build capacity of small scale aquaculture farmers. Facilitate improved service provision to small scale aquaculture farmers. Connect farmers to markets to receive better prices for good quality products. Facilitate interaction among stakeholders.

MPEDA LOGO The Scheme may be called the Marine Products (Quality Marking) Scheme, 2010. To qualify for the logo scheme, the products should have a standard for its Processing plant Water use Anti-biotic levels Pesticide and metal residues Use of additives
ELISA laboratories To ensure antibiotic free raw material for export production Pre harvest screening of aqua cultured shrimps for banned antibiotics like Chloramphenicol and Nitrofuran metabolites . 12 Elisa screening laboratories are operating in the country for facilitating Pre Harvest Testing (PHT) of farmed shrimp.
