2. Did you know that … Sentences may be expanded by adding one sentence to one or more other sentences. The product of this expansion is called a compound sentence.

3. What is a compound sentence? It’s when you connect two basic sentences. If you want to connect two basic sentences to make compound sentences, you need to use connecting words, called conjunctions.

4. Example  Basic sentence  Basic sentence *Mother Teresa was kind. * She was generous. Conjunction: AND    Compound Sentence ** Mother Teresa was kind, and she was generous.

5. What is a conjunction? A conjunction is a word that links(Connect) words, phrases or clauses. When you want to use a conjunction to join two sentences, you must use a comma before the conjunction .

There are seven basic conjunctions, called “Coordinating Conjunctions ”, that are used to connect two independent clauses, They are: And, or, nor, but, yet, for, so. ** Remember: A coordinating conjunction usually comes in the middle of a sentence, and it usually follows a comma (unless both clauses are very short).

7. “Coordinating Conjunctions ” These are the most important coordinating conjunctions: Conjunction AND Function * Shows addition. *Joins two similar ideas together. Example * Juan lives in Naranjo , and he studies at UCR. *Karla went to Cartago, and Viviana went to Heredia.

8. Conjunction * Or Function * They show two possibilities . ** OR: Joins two alternative ideas. Example  ** I could cook some supper, or we could order pizza. ** Do you prefer tea or coffee ? ** Would you like to go to the beach or to have an ice cream in the park?

9. Conjunction BUT Function * They show contrast. ** BUT: Joins two contrasting ideas. Example  ** Daniel moved away, but Gerardo stayed in the city. ** I studied a lot but I failed the exam
