BOOK – 1 VALUES FOR EXCELLENCE IN LIFE UNIT – 1 IN RESPONSE TO VALUES 1

INTRODUCTION Spirituality is the root of all values. Less than two –fifths of the world’s population benefits from the modern world. In India alone more than 2.5 million people live their entire lives on the street. 65% of the urban poor have no tap water and 37% no electricity and 50% defecate in the fields. It has been said, “There is enough for man’s need, but not for man’s greed.” Americans, for instance, comprise 5% of the world’s population but use 30% of the world’s resources and 25% of the world’s annual consumption of fossil fuel. No neighborly feeling, One in every three marriages in UK ends in divorce.

Erosion of Values The consciousness is the inner mediator of the human psyche. When the conscience is strong, an individual is self aware. The second way a person’s values are formed is according to influences from the outside. External influences have become so strong that people loss their self-respect and fell ego. All negative human behaviour can be linked to spiritual lacking. There is a need for a total spiritual re-education, a transformation of the ego energy, whereby individuals can gain sufficient inner power to judge right from wrong.

Revival of Values The process of strengthening individual conscience in order to promote acceptable human behaviour and ultimately social harmony, begins with strengthening the human psyche. It is one thing to recognise the importance of such spiritual principles and an other to live by them. Positive change can only occur when people are prepare to take full responsibility for their actions on both individual and social levels.

1.2 Objectives 1 . Clarity of values. 2. Value able or not? And Making change possible. 3. Self Assessment. 4. Taking responsibility and effective Delegation.

1.3 Clarity of Values 1. Every day we see the truth proven false and the false true. 2. Carol Gill-”The world has become topsyturvy . Human atrocity has become commonplace. Hunger, poverty, selfishness and greed abound.” 3. One after another our traditional role models of behaviour fall ignominiously from grace. 4. Human behaviour cotinues to become more and more vicious. 5. If Truth were inviting us to launch, we had probably make the appointment but cancel later due to conflicting priorities. 6. In this day and age values are as hotly debated as religion and politics.

1.4. Values able or not? And making change possible Sometime we feel as if they want to pat me on the head and say, “That’s nice what you’re doing about values. Now run along.” There’s disinterest. Some people profess to having values but are they clear about what these values mean? Are we really willing to make choice in which we lose approval, attention, recognition, safety, worth and status in the external world. If we were to follow my conscience in the inner world? Is it possible to live a life embodying utmost integrity? Life has a value, for achieving some higher ideals, the highest of which is God realization.

Making change possible What if I were to say that the status quo is no longer acceptable and that you had to change? How would you go about doing that? Stephen Covey, author of the 7 Habits of Highly Effective people, suggests we begin with the end in mind. If you knew you were going to die tomorrow, what would matter most? The writer Joseph Campbell said regrets are Illuminations come too late.

1.5. Self Assessment Ask your self, what is my actual state in the following areas: Personal: Growth, education, spirituality, fitness, creative self-expression. Relationship: Reflect on the self, God, family, friends, colleagues etc. Life style: Examine balance, use of time, how lifestyle reflects values. Service: Think about how you contribute to others, family, community, world. Ask, what is my degree of happiness?

2. Self Assessment Ask your self, what is my ideal state? Use your imagination to create your most perfect you the best you can be. The ideal you has perfect control over your time and your life. The discrepancy between your current and ideal states is identified as the need. What do you need to do to close that gap? For instance, you may want to wake up 15 minutes earlier to create quiet time for your self; you may want to walk away from gossip sessions or change the subject; or you may want to do some volunteer work in your community one day a month.

1.6. Taking responsibility and Effective Delegation Some people may feel dissatisfied with the notion that the world will become a better place when each individual person becomes a better person. Peace in the world can happen when there is peace within the individual. Some may think it preposterous that world transformation can happen through individual transformation. What if each individual, for instance, were determined to use neither derogator words about anyone else nor do anything to violate the rights of anyone else?

Effective Delegation You can help others accept delegation in two ways. Cultivate their ownership of the organization or the project by involving them in decisions, making them a part of a team and by communicating a mission and a purpose. Encourage people to falling in small ways as they build the skill to win in big ways. All delegation involves some element of risk taking and failure. Be example and tolerate failure as a part of your advancement, so will they. Applaud when they fail constructively, congratulate them honestly, often as they accept delegation.

Delegating by Steps Effective delegation is a four step process. Plan and check. Check in trouble. Feed back system. Abdication ( Adhityag ).

Six Steps to Effective Delegation:- Clearly define the task. Give guideline to begin to follow. Give authority to accomplish the task. Monitor the tasks but don’t hover. Give feedback along the way. Reward and recognize effort
