Tips for part 1 During 2 minutes preparation: Must agree with the task given Write 2-3 main ideas ( points only, not full sentences) If you don’t have many points to speak, talk in a slower pace Pronounce words individually so that you are easily understood Take a pause to avoid too many fillers such as “err..”, “erm..”, “ äah ..”, etc Use relevant vocabulary/LFW Consider Wh -questions:(who , why, when, how and what) and provide specific examples Use appropriate linkers so that points are well-organised
TIPS FOR PART 2 During the 3 minutes preparation Choose at least 3 points to propose with good reasons Prepare 1 less favourite point with good reasons (so that there will be some arguments to make the discussion livelier) During the discussion : Only the first speaker introduces the situation and greet (refer to the rubrics and situation given) Don’t present all your points at the same time Practise interruptions to avoid one person dominating the discussion Can ask question to another candidate to keep the discussion alive Use polite and appropriate social conventions Closing : Refer to the wordings in the rubric ( at the bottom end of the question)
REMEMBER! DOs DON’Ts Look at the examiners when you greet them Have eye-contact with the candidates Use gestures when necessary Sit up straight Help your friend when he/she needs it by prompting with helpful questions or by continuing what you think she/he wants to say Be polite and use appropriate social conventions Interrupt during a long pause Write while your friend is speaking Attack 3Rs in your speech (Race, Religion, Royalty) Dominate or conquer the discussion Ask difficult question to another candidate Use inappropriate words or expressions like “No, that’s wrong”, or “Ï think that’s nonsense” Insult or make personal attack

BAND CRITERIA 5+ Very relevant content with excellent development Very fluent, smooth, matured and intelligent Apt use of LFW 5.0 Appropriate content and vocabulary, with good development Fluent but with some hesitation 4.5 Speech is easy to understand Content is relevant 4.0 Some errors in stress and intonation Use simple but adequate cohesive devices 3.5 Can keep communication going but not very fluent Can use simple grammatical forms with control 3.0 Present ideas but not well-developed Use some relevant vocabulary 2.5 Content is partially relevant Use basic sentences and many repetitions 2.0 Response is too short and simple Limited vocabulary
