Multiplication By Katie McColly

Key Terms Multiplier : the number or numbers being multiplied Product : the answer Multiplication Signs : x * ∙ Example : 2 x 3 = 6 2 and 3 are both m ultipliers and 6 is the product

What is Multiplication? Multiplication is nothing but a shortcut for addition! An equation that tells us how many times to add a number with itself

Example #1 What is 5 x 2 ? This equation is telling us to add 5 with itself two times 5 + 5 = 10 So 5 x 2 = 10

5 x 2 is the same problem as 2 x 5 We would now be adding 2 with itself 5 times!

2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 10

So 5 x 2 = 10

Multiplying by 1 Any number multiplied by one is the same number Why??? That number is only being added once so it stays the same

For Example 3 x 1= ? We are adding 3 only 1 time

So . . . . .

3 + Nothing Else = 3

Meaning that 3 x 1 = 3 This works with any number! LIKE… 200 x 1 = 200 Because 200 + nothing else = 200 Or 1,000,000 x 1 = 1,000,000

This works in reverse too 1 x 3 for example 1 +1 +1 =3 So 1 x 3 = 3

The Zero Rule Any number multiplied by zero will equal zero WHY??? You aren’t multiplying the number by anything

Examples 7 x 0 = 0 0 x 4 = 0 1 x 0 = 0 255 x 0 = 0 Any number x 0 = 0
