Intro Acute infec . Disease Caused by RNA virus classified as rubulavirus of family paramyxoviridae No n suppurative enlargement and tenderness of one or both parotid glands Negligible mortality, morbidity is high

Problem statement Incidence- 100-1000cases / 1 lakh population

Agent fac Agent- Myxovirus parotiditis Source- clinical & subclinical case Communicability- usually 4-6 days before the onset of symp and a week or more there after. Maximum infectivity is just before and at the onset of parotitis

Host fac Age and sex- 5-9yrs, no age is exempt if no immunity More severe in adults Immunity- one attack, clinical, sub-clinical life long immunity

Environment fac Peak is winter and spring Epidemic is associated with over crowding

Mode of transmission Droplet infection and direct contact with infected person

Incubation period Varies from 2-3 weeks Usually 18 days

Clinical features Generalized viral infection 30-40% clinically non- apparent Pain and swelling in one or both parotid gland Also involve sub lingual and sub mandibular glands Often child complains ear pain prior to onset of swelling Pain and stiffness in opening mouth

May also affect Testis Pancreas CNS Ovaries Prostate Severe cases might mark fever, headache for 3-5 days Swelling subsides over 1-2 weeks

Complication Frequent but not serious Orchitis , ovaritis , pancreatitis, meningo -encephalitis, thyroiditis , neuritis, hepatitis, myocarditis

Prevention Vaccination: live attenuated Single dose- 0.5ml IM
