Mumps is a contagious disease that is caused bymumps
virus.
Anyone who is not immune from either previous
mumps infection or from vaccination can get mumps
Some time called epidemic protitis.
Mumps typically starts with few days of fever headache
muscle aches tiredness and loss of appetite and loss of
swelling of salivary glands
4

Mumps is an acute viral infection of childhood that
typically involves swelling of one or both parotid
gland although many different organs can be infected
5

Paramyxovirus
Enveloped RNA virus
One antigenic type
Rapidly inactivated by UV light, heat, and various
chemical agents
6

7

Before introduction of the vaccine in 1967
The peak incidence of the disease occured in children
5-6 year of age
85 % infection occured in children younger than 15 yr
of age
Mumps is endemic in most unvaccinated populations
It is distributed worldwide
Affect both sex equally
8

Mumps virus the cause of mumps is an virus of the
genus rubulavirus in the paramyxoviridae family
9

After entry into the last and initial multiplication in
the cells of the respiratory tract the virus is
bloodborne to many tissue among which the salivary
and other gland are the most susceptible .
10

Incubation period 14-18 days
Nonspecific prodrome of low-grade fever, headache,
malaise, myalgias
Parotitis in 30%-40%
Up to 20% of infections asymptomatic
May present as lower respiratory illness, particularly
in preschool-aged children
11

Parotitis: Inflammation of the salivary glands under
the ear
Fever
Headache
Muscle Aches
Fatigue
Loss of Appetite

The incubation period ranges from 14-24 days ,with a
peak at 17-18 days
In children prodromal manifestation are rare but may
be changed by
Fever , muscular pain ,headache ,malaise
Parotid pain is the most pronounced during the first
few days of swelling
Trismus (spasm of the masticatory muscles )can
occure
14

Mumps is a contagious disease that is spread from
person to person through contact with respiratory
secretions such as saliva from an infected person
When the infected person sneezes the droplets
aerosolizeand can enter the eyes, nose,or mouth,of
another person
Mumps can also be spread by sharing food and drinks
15

The diagnosis of mumps parotitis is usually apparent
from the clinical symptoms and the physical
examination
IgM and IgG antibodies are most commonly used for
the diagnose
As with any inflammation of the salivary gland serum
amylase is often elevated
16

Inflammation of the:
Testicles
Pancreas
Ovaries
Breast
Encephalitis or Meningitis
Deafness
Male infertility
