Muscular System Overview Summary Presentation Department: Health Track, College of Applied Medical Sciences

Objectives Our Objectives: • Describe the general structure of skeletal muscle. • Recognize how skeletal muscles are named. • Summarize how muscle contraction occurs.

Types of Muscles Three Types of Muscles: 1. Skeletal Muscle 2. Cardiac Muscle 3. Smooth Muscle

Functions of Skeletal Muscle Key Functions: • Support body posture against gravity. • Facilitate movement of bones and joints. • Maintain body temperature. • Assist in venous blood and lymph movement. • Protect internal organs.

Structure of Skeletal Muscle Parts of Skeletal Muscle: • Origin: Immovable fixed end. • Fleshy Part: Bulk of the muscle. • Insertion: Movable end formed by muscle tendon.

Muscle Action Muscle Action: • Occurs through the contraction of skeletal muscle after stimulation by a motor nerve. • Agonist Muscle: Prime mover producing muscle action. • Synergist Muscle: Assists the prime mover. • Antagonist Muscle: Opposes the prime mover.

Naming of Muscles Based on Size: • Maximus (large), Minimus (small), Longus (long), Brevis (short) Based on Shape: • Deltoid (triangular), Teres (rounded), Latissimus (wide/flat) Based on Location: • External/Internal, Pectoralis (chest) Based on Number of Attachments: • Biceps (2 heads), Triceps (3 heads), Quadriceps (4 heads)

Muscle Contraction Mechanism: • Contraction is triggered by motor nerve stimulation. • Motor nerves consist of groups of axons attached to muscle fibers at the neuromuscular junction. • Axon terminals release neurotransmitters to stimulate muscle fibers.

Summary Key Takeaways: • Skeletal muscle consists of origin, fleshy part, and insertion. • Muscle contraction moves bones at joints. • Muscles are classified as agonist, synergist, and antagonist based on their movement roles. • Muscle names are derived from their shape, size, location, attachment, or action.
