MUSIC OF THE LOWLANDS OF LUZON
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC OF LUZON INTRODUCTION The instrumental music in the Philippines has significant functions to the different activities of the Filipinos. There were groups or ensembles since nineteenth century,they were group according to the type of materials. Bamboos, wood, metal, copper, and brass are some of the materials used in the instruments;each produced a unique and good sound quality.
A.WHAT IS RONDALLA?
RONDALLA One of the prominent forms of music accompaniment performed by a brass band and native stringed known as Rondalla. A musical group that had its beginnings during Spanish Period but popularized only during American period, Rondalla is otherwise known as “Comparsa”.
ANTONIO J. MOLONA -An educator, composer and musician. National Artist in Music in 1973, he was known as the “Claude Debussy of the Philippines”
RONDALLA The rondalla instruments have commonalities in terms of physical appearance. The Banduria, Laud, Octavina have the same number of strings which is consist of 6 sets of strings with a total of fourtheen, the Guitar and Bajo De Uñas have different number of strings.
Instruments of the Rondalla
1.Banduria – it is a pear-shaped instrument with a round sound hole at the center. It plays the melody as well as ornamental passages.
2. Laud – It is plectrum-plucked instrument. It plays the second voice and is tuned an octave lower than the banduria. The design is similar to the banduria but it has a larger neck and 2 f-holes.
– It is like a small guitar with a shorter neck. It supplements the rondalla music giving passages or counterpoint for harmonic effects. Octavina and Laud have the same tuning, one octave lower than the Banduria. 3.Octavina
– It has six strings with a long fretted neck. It has a flat back and is curved at the sides. The fingerboard has from eighteen to twenty frets separated by metal transverse strips. The fret’s function is for the finger placements of the player.The guitar is both a solo and harmonizing instrument. 4.Guitar
- it is also called “double bass/bassviol/contrabass”,the largest rondalla instrument. Its shape is similar to the violin with f-sound holes. Produces fundamental ground tones to the music. It has 4 strings. 5. Bajo de uñas
EPIFANIO DE LOS SANTOS -One of the three great Filipino guitarists. Along with him was Fernando Canon, a revolutionary hero and Guillermo Estrella Tolentino, National Artist for Scuplture in 1973. EDSA was named after him.
A.WHAT IS BAND?
BAND The band either brass or marching band, three sections namely, the woodwind, the brasswind, and the percussion. It was popularized during 20th century. Walter H. Loving founded the Philippine Constabulary Band on 1902 compose of 30 selected musicians. The band was later renamed as the Philippine Army Band.
A group of musicians who played different musical instruments made mostly from bamboos. The foundation of this group started when the early musicians could not afford to buy an instrument of their own, but because of their creativity, they were able to produce improvised instruments. I. Musikong Bumbong
– A bamboo instrument originating from Indonesia.It consists of two or more bamboo tubes tuned in octaves and hung from above a slotted resonator tube. The way to play the instrument is by shaking its body to produce one pitch. Angklung instruments are needed to play a melody, one angklung is assigned to one pitch only. II. Angklung Ensemble
III.Pangkat Kawayan – A bamboo orchestra popularly known as the “Singing Bamboos of the Philippines”. It uses nontraditional bamboo instruments in more than a hundred various sizes, shapes, and designs.
The Composition of Pangkat Kawayan are: a.Bamboo tube(bumbong) b.Bamboo Marimba (Talungating) c.Bamboo Piano(Tipangklung) d.Bamboo Flute(Tulali) e.Bamboo Knockers (Kalatok) f.Bamboo Percussion ( Rattles, auxillaries-drum, cymbals, tringales, and gongs)
