INTRODUCTION ABOUT
THE SUBJECT Understanding the Self is a subject or
concept that focuses on exploring
who you are as a person — your
thoughts, feelings, behaviors, values,
and identity. It helps you understand
why you think and act the way you
do, and how you can grow and
improve as an individual. It’s about
becoming aware of your personality,
strengths, weaknesses, emotions, and
motivations.

LESSON 1
OVERVIEW The Material Self refers to the part of a person’s
identity that is shaped by their physical
possessions and belongings things that they
consider extensions of themselves. Body is how
we see and care for our physical appearance.
Clothing and possessions is the things we own
that represent who we are. Immediate family
and home is the people and environment we feel
emotionally connected to. According to
philosopher William James, the material self
consists of everything that belongs to us our
body, family, clothes, and home because these
are things we highly value and identify with.
Our possessions often reflect our values, social
status, and personal preferences.

LESSON 1
INSIGHT The Material Self reminds us that the things
we own and our physical appearance are
deeply tied to our sense of identity and self-
worth. However, it also teaches us to reflect
on how much importance we place on
material things. While possessions can bring
comfort and express who we are, they don’t
fully define our true self.
True self-worth should come from who we
are inside, not just from what we have.
Appreciating material things while
maintaining balance helps us live with
gratitude and contentment—recognizing that
our value as a person goes beyond physical
possessions

LESSON 2
OVERVIEW The sexual self refers to the part of a
person’s identity that is connected to
gender, sexual orientation, attitudes,
and behaviors related to intimacy
and attraction. It covers both,
biological is hormones,
reproductive organs, and physical
development during puberty. While
Psychological/Social is feelings,
attraction, self-image, values, and
cultural influences about sex and
relationships.

LESSON 2
INSIGHT Understanding the sexual self is essential
for personal growth and self-acceptance.It
helps individuals build healthy
relationships based on respect and trust
,make responsible decisions about
intimacy and sexual health. Develop self-
awareness and confidence about who they
are. Recognizing and respecting one’s
sexual self also promotes empathy and
acceptance toward others with different
orientations or experiences. It teaches that
sexuality is a natural and integral part of
being human something to be
understood, not judged.

LESSON 3
OVERVIEW The Triangle Theory of Love,
developed by psychologist Robert
Sternberg, explains that love is
made up of three main components:
intimacy, passion, and
commitment. These three elements
form the “triangle” of love and
determine the type and strength of a
relationship.The theory shows that
love is complex and multifaceted,
and lasting relationships require a
balance of emotional closeness,
attraction, and dedication.

LESSON 3
INSIGHT The Triangle Theory of Love helps us
understand that love is not just a
feeling, but a balance of emotional
connection, attraction, and long-term
dedication. It reminds us that
relationships evolve passion might
fade, but intimacy and commitment
can deepen over time. Developing a
strong relationship means nurturing all
three sides of the triangle. Without
balance, love can become one-
dimensional or unstable. For example,
passion without intimacy may fade
quickly, while commitment without
intimacy may feel empty.

LESSON 4
OVERVIEW The physical self refers to the tangible
aspect of who we are our body,
appearance, health, and physical abilities.
It is the part of the self that we can see
and touch, and it plays a vital role in
shaping our identity and how we interact
with the world. From birth to adulthood,
our physical self goes through constant
change and development, influenced by
genetics, environment, lifestyle, and
experiences. This includes our physical
features such as height, skin color, body
shape, and other biological factors
inherited from our parents.

LESSON 4
INSIGHT Understanding the physical self is more
than just recognizing what we look like
it’s about appreciating and accepting
our body for what it is and what it can
do. Each person’s physical form is
unique, and that uniqueness makes us
who we are. In a world that often
pressures people to look a certain way,
learning to love and care for our body
becomes an act of self-respect and self-
love. By valuing our physical self, we
also learn discipline, confidence, and
gratitude for the body that allows us to
live, feel, and experience life.

CONCLUSION ABOUT
THE SUBJECT In conclusion, understanding the self is a continuous
journey of discovering who we truly are our thoughts,
emotions, values, strengths, weaknesses, and purpose.
It helps us gain deeper awareness of our identity and
how we relate to others and the world around us. By
understanding ourselves, we learn to make wiser
decisions, build healthier relationships, and live a
more meaningful life. This self-awareness allows us
to accept both our flaws and potentials, guiding us
toward personal growth and self-improvement.
Ultimately, understanding the self is not just about
knowing our personality or appearance; it is about
embracing our whole being mind, body, and spirit.
When we truly understand ourselves, we develop
confidence, empathy, and resilience. We become
more capable of facing life’s challenges with clarity
and purpose. Through self-understanding, we learn
that the key to happiness and fulfillment begins
within us.

OVERALL REFLECTION Understanding oneself goes beyond knowing our name or
recognizing our face it involves exploring the different
aspects that shape who we are as individuals. The Material
Self, Sexual Self, Theory of Love, and Physical Self are
deeply connected elements that influence our identity,
behavior, and relationships with others.
The Material Self reminds us that our possessions and the
things we value often reflect our sense of identity and
security. The clothes we wear, the gadgets we use, and the
space we live in all mirror how we want to be seen and what
gives us comfort or pride. However, learning about the
material self also teaches us not to let material things define
our worth, but instead to find balance between what we own
and who we truly are.
The Sexual Self explores our gender, desires, and the way we
express intimacy. It plays an important role in forming our
personal identity and in understanding how we connect
emotionally and physically with others. Recognizing this part
of ourselves teaches us respect both for our own boundaries
and for others’. It also emphasizes that sexuality is not
something to be ashamed of but a natural, meaningful part of
being human when guided by responsibility, respect, and
love.

OVERALL REFLECTION The Theory of Love helps us understand the nature and
forms of love passion, intimacy, and commitment. It
reveals that love is not just a feeling but a choice that
grows with time and effort. It connects with all other
aspects of the self: we love better when we know and
accept our physical, material, and sexual selves.
The Physical Self represents how we see and care for
our body. It includes our appearance, health, and overall
well-being. Understanding the physical self helps us
realize that our body is not just something we live in it
is part of who we are. By nurturing and accepting it, we
build confidence and self-respect. It reminds us that true
beauty lies in self-acceptance and healthy living, not in
comparison with others.
Altogether, these lessons lead to one realization: self-
understanding is the foundation of genuine relationships
and personal growth. When we know ourselves our
needs, values, and emotions we are able to live more
meaningfully, love more deeply, and build healthier
connections with others. True fulfillment comes not
from perfection, but from awareness, acceptance, and
the continuous journey of becoming our best selves.
