In 1965, Yale University undergraduate Frederick W. Smith
wrote a term paper that invented an industry and changed what’s
possible. In the paper, he laid out the logistical challenges facing
pioneering firms in the information technology industry.
He proposed a system specifically designed to accommodate
time-sensitive shipments such as medicine, computer parts,
and electronics. Smith’s professor apparently didn’t see the revolu-
tionary implications of his thesis, and received a
“C” because the
idea
”wasn’t feasible” ...
How it all began...
Fred would then go on to establish Federal Express,
a Multinational Courier Delivery Service, which would
eventually grow to be a
65.5 billion dollar organization
with more than
425,000 employees world wide.

Explore who we are, what we do, and how we support our employees.
We specialize in developing a modernized
blend of solutions to best fit the adult learn-
ers’ needs. We will also address system
limitations and scalability concerns. Our staff
will work with you to create high-impact,
quality online modules complete with audio,
graphics and animation. “Start-to-finish”
original content development begins with
research and development and continues
through instructional design, script devel-
opment, graphics creation, editing, subject
\matter expert review, quality checks, train
the trainer and launch. This comprehensive
process allows the creation of complete and
consistent training packages across multiple
delivery modalities, including web based
and instructor lead.
We will work with our customers to develop
meaningful working relationships and
understanding of the departments’ ob-
jectives and performance gaps. The LDS
team will help identify core competency
needs so that recommendations will focus
on skills, knowledge and abilities required
for success. We will recommend winning
solutions that achieve measurable and
meaningful results.
Game based learning, micro learning, virtual
reality, and mobile learning platforms are
just a few examples of new and exciting
technology the LDS department is re-
searching. We are currently exploring the
feasibility of design and implementation for
several operational areas.

We design learning activities that develop
the skills, behaviors and competencies
required to meet strategic business goals.
Through developing internal training
programs at FXG facilities and our work
with numerous business partners, we have
developed a unique understanding of how
to blend classroom study with practical on-
the-job experiences that are most effective
for FXG.
The most effective learning and devel-
opment programs directly support an
organization’s strategic business goals. An
important step is to measure the effective-
ness of the learning activities and to identify
strengths and opportunities for improve-
ment. Our experts will assist you in defining
measurable and meaningful results.

cialists are recognized re-
cipients of numerous FXG
awards for content devel-

in learning. Some of those
awards include Five Star,
Business Excellence, Purple
Promise and Bravo Zulu.
We use an instructional design ap-
proach to develop training materials
for our customers. Recently we have
modified our approach to mirror the
ABLE model. Assess, Build, Launch,
Evaluate. This is comparable to other
instructional design approaches suc-
cessfully used in the design and de-
velopment of training for commercial,
military and industrial applications.

Development

Individual development
Individual development starts with self-discovery. Our solutions help to
create awareness of current behaviors and natural talents that affect personal
effectiveness. Through assessment and coaching, we help individuals create
goals and action steps for individual performance and effectiveness improvement.
Our team can help you build a complete individual development experience.
Team Development
A team is a group of people with complementary skills and talents, who are
committed to a common purpose and set of goals, to which they hold themselves
mutually accountable. Team development, then, is a process of developing those
complimentary skills and talents, enhancing mutual understanding of each team
members’ unique strengths and coordinating efforts of each member in such a
way that results in superior team performance. Team development can be said to
lead to performance outcomes that are greater than the sum of its parts.
Organizational Development
Organizational Development is a process of continuous assessment of
organizational climate and culture, building of solutions (including action plans),
launching of those solutions and evaluation of results, with the goal of transferring
knowledge and skills to and among organization members with the goal of
improving their capacity for solving problems and managing future change.
Organizational climate and culture are influences by organizational processes,
practices, as well as the attitudes and/or beliefs about these processes and
practices.
“Do you have the
opportunity to do what
you do best every day?
Chances are, your natural
talents are untapped!”

QUALITY DRIVEN
MANAGEMENT
QDM is the way FedEx continuously improves our business processes to meet two
key goals: To deliver the superior experiences that customers expect and to
deliver superior business performance by minimizing waste, cost, and effort.
Measure, Measure,
Measure
Understand that customers can be
internal as well as external. By defini-
tion, those who receive the output of a
team’s work are its customers — wheth-
er internal or external to FedEx.
Understand what adds value for cus-
tomers. When we clearly understand
customer requirements and expecta-
tions, we can determine the essential
activities that add or enable value for
customers — and eliminate the ines-
sential.
Quality involves
Teamwork
Involve the whole team. Quality is not a
special job title. It has to involve everyone —
from the frontline to the corner office. A good
first step in any QDM effort is to reach out to
all stakeholders.
Be Scientific
Optimize Business
Performance
Dig in to discover root causes. Quality
problems aren’t always what they seem
to be at first glance.
Measuring failures tells us when we have
failed to meet a customer expectation and
have room to improve. The goal is not to
dwell on the negative — it’s to identify the
opportunities that will yield the most positive
impact for customers.
View Failures
as Opportunities
Speak up when problems occur. Encourage
people to surface problems. Make sure
everyone, especially the frontline, knows that
speaking up about problems is welcomed
and valued — because it helps us find new
ways to improve and innovate.
Customers Define
Quality
About QDM
FedEx Quality Driven Management
(QDM) is the way FedEx is making
its legendary Quality even better
developed by FedEx, built by FedEx
and optimized for FedEx, QDM is
an approach to Quality that is as
unique as FedEx itself. QDM offers
common ways to improve Quality
across the entire enterprise - using
shared language, tools and Quality
practices to:.
• Analyze the cause of problems
• Plan Corrective Actions
• Implement Improvements
QDM Mission
Deliver market-leading customer
experience, business excellence,
and financial return through a
Quality-oriented culture and day-to-
day application of Quality science.
QDM Goals
1. To deliver the superior
experiences that customers
require and expect
2. To deliver superior business
performance by minimizing
waste, cost and effort
How to Use QDM
QDM makes Quality the driving
concern every day, and offers methods
to manage the following business
challenges:
• Daily work - everyday activities and
productivity of a work group
• Quality improvement projects -
one-time projects that improve a
process
• Redesign projects - special
projects that completely redesign a
business process
QDM In Detail
“QDM will give us common ways to
improve quality across our entire
enterprise. For the first time, we will
all use the same language, tools
and metrics to analyze the causes
of problems and plan corrective
actions.”
- Fred Smith

Gamification
FedEx has recently partnered with experts in gamification, such as Karl
Kapp, who states the following: “Games in our training programs are
not a break from learning - they are learning. They are everything we
say should be a part of great instructional design. They engage the
learner, are interactive, and they enable the learner to get immediate
feedback and to demonstrate mastery. Gamification, when
done correctly, focuses learners on overcoming challenges,
taking on important roles and overcoming obstacles during
the learning process. Gamification can lead to higher order
thinking skills and toward a focus on engagement and
immersion of the learner— two elements critical to longer
term retention and application of knowledge.”
Our future growth relies on
competitiveness and
innovation, skills and
productivity... and these in
turn rely on the education
of our people.
At the FedEx Institute of Technology, experts are in the process of
implementing Virtual Reality training into the organization’s process. With
companies such as FedEx, who has large fleets and thousands of employees,
providing consistent training at low costs can be difficult. VR is a low cost
strategy to deliver consistent training to employees who are spread out in
various geographical locations who are unable to attend live courses at FedEx
Headquarters. The explosion in VR training is driven by its unique ability to replicate
a place and a situation that would be difficult, and sometimes impossible to do in
real life. VR training makes the kind of deep impression classroom training on 2D
Animation
Virtual Reality

FedEx has recently partnered with
Animation providers such as Vyond, to turn
FedEx information into captivating animated
training videos. Animation training can be used
to support employee cognitive processes that
ultimately result in them understanding the subject
matter. Animation can be used to make very exciting
and fun animations into which education and training
can easily be incorporated. Instructors can also use
animation to demonstrate things and concepts visually
exactly how they want to since they have control of every
aspect of the animation. Animation is also an affective learning
tool that attracts attention, engages the learner

Learning Development
Process
We design learning activities that help develop the skills, behaviors, competencies, and transfer of
knowledge required to meet strategic business goals. Through our expertise and our work with
numerous FXG business partners, we have developed a unique understanding of how to blend
classroom study with practical on-the-job experiences that are most effective for our industry, model,
work sites and job roles. We will help you to identify the core competencies needed to focus on the
skills, knowledge and abilities required for success.
Our team of experts will assist you in determining
and establishing metrics and processes to measure
the effectiveness of your learning and development
program.
Build
Evaluate
The most effective learning and development
programs directly support an organization’s
strategic goals. An important step in meeting
your business objectives is to measure the
effectiveness of your current needs to identify
strengths and opportunities for improvement.
To determine and recommend the best
course of action, our specialists will conduct
a comprehensive needs analysis that may
include, work site visits and interviews with
key personnel. They may also review existing
training, corresponding policies, data reports
and trending activity.
Asses
Our start-to-finish content development
begins with assessment and continues
through instructional design, script
development, graphics creation, editing, SME
(subject matter expert) review, authoring,
programming tests, quality reviews and
launching. This comprehensive process allows
the creation of complete and consistent
learning packages across multiple delivery
modalities, including web based design,
micro learning, interactive PDFs, instructor
lead courses, webinars, gamification, virtual
reality and mobile learning.
