What Narrative Text is?
A narrative Text is a piece
of text which tells a story
and entertain the reader or
listener

Orientation: Sets the scene and introduces
the participants.
Evaluation: stepping back to evaluate the
plight.
Complication: a crisis arise.
Resolution: the crisis is resolved, for better
and for worse.
Re-orientation : optional.
The Generic Structure:

Language Feature of Narrative Text
Past tense (killed, drunk, etc)
Adverb of time (Once upon a time, one day, etc)
Time conjunction (when, then, suddenly, etc)
Specific character. The character of the story is specific, not general.
(Cinderella, Snow White, Alibaba, Sangkuriang, Malin Kundang, etc.)
Action verbs. A verb that shows an action. (killed, dug, walked, etc)
Direct speech. It is to make the story lively. (Snow White said, ”My
name is Snow White”). The direct speech uses present tense.

There are many types of narrative. They can be imaginary,
factual or a combination of both. They may include fairy
stories, mysteries, science fiction, romances, horror stories,
adventure stories, fables, myths and legends, historical
narratives, ballads, slice of life, personal experience
Types of Narrative

Legend of Toba Lake
Once upon a time, there was a man who was living in north Sumatra. He lived in a simple hut in a farming field. He did some
gardening and fishing for his daily life.
One day, while the man was do fishing, he caught a big golden fish in his trap. It was the biggest catch which he
ever had in his life. Surprisingly, this fish turned into a beautiful princess. He fell in love with her and proposed
her to be his wife. She said; “Yes, but you have to promise not to tell anyone about the secret that I was once a
fish, otherwise there will be a huge disaster”. The man made the deal and they got married, lived happily, and had
a son, named Samosir
A few years later, Samosir was asked by his mother to bring lunch to his father out in the fields. but in the middle of the way,
Samosir was so hungry and he ate his father’s lunch. Unfortunately, he found out and got furious, and shouted; “You damned
son of a fish”. Samosir ran home and asked his mother. The mother started crying, felt sad that her husband had broke his
promise.
Then she told her to run up the hills because a huge disaster was about to come. When samosir left, she prayed. Soon there was
a big earthquake followed by non-stop pouring rain. The whole area got flooded and became Toba Lake. She turned into a fish
again and the man became the island of Samosir.
Example of Narrative-Legend

What we call “orientation” is actually an introduction of the story. It informs
the readers who when and where inside the story. It tells readers the
specific participants in the specific place and time. In the legend of Toba
lake, the first paragraph is clearly seen as an orientation. It introduces the
participants involved in the story. In short, they are a man with his wife
(formerly a fish), and his daughter. They live in North Sumatra once time.
Complication has the greatest ruler in relation of learning English text types
since it the only one which can differ narrative from other types. Without
conflicts, the text is NOT a narrative any more. The complication of Toba
Lake is seen when the man failed to keep his promise to his wife which he
would NEVER AND NEVER talk to anybody that she (his wife) had been a
fish. Due to his failure of keeping the promise, the complication rises into the
climax. His wife is very angry to him
