Nasal obstruction and polyps
PRESENTED BY
OM VERMA
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

Nasal obstructionis the partial or complete blockage of
the breathing airway in the nasal cavity. This can be
uncomfortable, as it forces to breatheit is called nasal
obstruction
According to lippen cott
According to Levis

Nasal obstruction it is a define as Nasal passages
swollen with excess fluid and mucus, may be
triggered by infection, tobacco smoke or
perfume and foreign objects , anatomical
variation it is called nasal obstruction .
According to brunnerand siddharth

Commontemporary causesfor nasal
congestion include:
Chronic sinusitis
Allergic rhinitis (allergies, such as hay
fever)
Environmental irritants, such as smoke or
dust
Sinus infection
Cold or flu
Certain medications, such as high blood
pressure medicine

Some commonanatomical factorswhich can
contribute to nasal obstruction or congestion
include:
Deviated nasal septum (crooked cartilage
within the nose blocks the airway)
Enlarged turbinates(bony structures within
the nasal cavity)
Nasal polyps (benign growths within the nasal
cavity)
Enlarged adenoids (block the back of the nasal
passage)
Nasal tumors (benign or cancerous)

Due to etiological factors A wide range of biologically
active agents (eg, histamine, tumor necrosis factor-
alpha, interleukins, cell adhesion molecules)
cell types contribute to inflammation,
which can manifest as venous engorgement, increased
nasal secretions
tissue swelling/edema,
ultimately leading to impaired airflow

Depending on the cause and
severity of your nasal
congestion,doctormay prescribe:
Topical nasal steroids or
antihistamine spray
Oral antihistamines or steroids
Antibiotics (if a bacterial infection is
present )

Image Guided Endoscopic Sinus Surgery:
Outpatient procedure performed using an
endoscope to restore ventilation and
drainage within the nasal cavity

COMPLICATION
Dry mouth, due to chronic mouth
breathing.
A feeling of pressure or congestion in nasal
passages. Disturbed sleep, due to the
unpleasantness of not being able to
breathe comfortably through nose at
night.

According to lippen cott

Nasal polyps are soft, painless,
noncancerous growths on the lining of
your nasal passages or sinuses. They hang
down like teardrops or grapes. They result
from chronic inflammation and are
associated with asthma, recurring
infection, allergies, drug sensitivity or
certain immune disorders.
According to luckmans

TEST OF CYSTIC FIBROSIS
A sweat test measures the amount of chloride, a part
of salt, in Sweat. It is used to diagnose cystic fibrosis
(CF). People with CF have a high level of chloride in
their sweat. CF is a disease that causes mucus build-
up in the lungs and other organs.

COMPLICATIONS
block normal airflow and fluid drainage,
and also because of the long-term
irritation and swelling (inflammation)
underlying their development. Potential
complications include:Obstructive sleep
apnea.
