Introduction The govt. of India launch the national mental health Programme in 1982 , keeping in view the heavy burden of mental illness in the community and inadequate of m ent a l healt h c ar e inf r a s t ru c t ur e i n the country to deal with it.
Definition Mental Health:- (WHO):- Mental health is a state of wellbeing in which an individual realize his/ her own abilities can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and is able to make a contribution to his/her community. Mental Illness:- A mental illness is a medical condition that disrupts person's thinking, feeling, mood, ability, to release to others and daily functioning . mental illness are medical condition that often result in diminished capacity for coping with the ordinary demands of life.
Aim of N.M.H.P Prevent and treatment of mental neurological disorder and there associated disability. Use of mental health technology to improve general health services. Application of mental health principles in total national development to improve quality of life .
Objective of N.M.H.P To provide mental health care facility to every class of specified population and specifically to those who need of it. Use the knowledge of mental health in the care of the general health and social development. To increase the community participation in the development of mental health services and encourage the effort toward self help in the community. To select essential elements for mental health care. To distribute all the available resources of mental health services on equal bases.

Warning sings of mentally ill person IN YOUNG CHILDREN Changes in school performance Poor grades despite strong efforts Changes in sleeping and eating habits. Hyperactivity Frequent temper tantrums.
IN OLDER CHILDREN AND PRE ADOLOSCENCE Substance used Inability to cope with problem and daily activities. Changes in sleeping and eating. Excessive complaint of physical alignment. Changes in ability to manage responsibilities at home and school. Prolonged negative mood often accompanied by poor appetite or thoughts of death.
IN ADULTS - YOUNG ADULTS Confused thinking Prolonged depression Feeling of extreme high and low Excessive fear and anxiety Social withdrawal. Dramatic changes in eating and sleeping habits Strong feeling of anger. Strong thoughts(Delusion) Seeing of hearing things that are not there(Hallucination) & Suicidal thoughts.
Role of team members Health professionals at PHC and SC were trained in handling common mental disorders The medical officer at PHC was trained to diagnose and treat common mental disorders, and they were asked to refer the complex cases to district hospital The psychiatrist at district hospital ran the mental health clinic and had provision to admit 10 patients The district health officer reviewed the program every month with medical officers of all PHCs at Bellary district.
District Mental Health Programme Under NMHP National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) undertook a Pilot Project at Bellary district of Karnataka to asses feasibility of DMHP. DMHP provide following services :- School mental health services. College counseling service. Workplace stress management
