National Mental Health Programme
•The Government of India has launched the National Mental Health
Programme (NMHP) in 1982,
• Keeping in view the heavy burden of mental illness in the community,
and the absolute inadequacy of mental health care infrastructure in the
country to deal with it,
• 4 RMH (Pune, Thane, Nagpur, Ratnagiri) &
• 6 DMHP - Raigad, Jalgaon, Satara, Parbhani, Buldhana,
Amravati)
• 6 New DMHP – Nashik,Osmanabad, Wardha, Bhandara,
Gadchiroli, A’nagar – PIP sanctioned by GOI
•PIP Rs. 83.20 lakhs sanctioned for each new DMHP
•PIP for old district are under consideration by GOI
Aims
•Prevention and treatment of mental and
neurological disorders and their associated
disabilities.
•Use of mental health technology to improve
general health services.
•Application of mental health principles in total
national development to improve quality of life.
Objectives
•To ensure availability and accessibility of minimum mental health care
particularly to the most vulnerable and underprivileged sections of
population .
•To encourage application of mental health knowledge in general health
care and in social development.
•To promote community participation in the mental health services
development and to stimulate efforts towards self-help in the
community.
•To integrate Mental Health Programme with General Health Services.
•To utilize existing Health infrastructure to provide Mental Health Care
Services.
•To train Health personnel in Mental Health Care needs.

Manpower -
1)Psychiatrist (Program Officer)
2)Psychiatric Social Worker
3)Clinical Psychologist
4)Psychiatric Nurse / Trained general nurse
5)Record keeper
6)Community nurse
7)Case Registry Assistant
•Above mentioned sanction staff have been recruited in old DMHP.
•Instructions vide letter dated 17 may 2014 have been issued to the
concerned Civil Surgen to recruit the above mention the staff for newly
sanctioned DMHP.
Activities
•Recruitment of Manpower
•Training – PHC MO, Nurses, Para Medical Workers & Other Health Staff
•IEC & Community Mobilizations services
•Procurring & distribution of IEC material
•Awareness among community, school & colleges, work places, urban &
slum
•Procurement of drugs
•At non DMHP District Hospital OPD & IPD acivities to be started specially
for Mental Health
•Monthly performance report to be submitted to State Mental Health cell
