An ecologically sensitive area/zone(ESZ) are areas notified by Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate change Government of India around Protected Areas, National Parks & wildlife sanctuaries The purpose of EZE’s , is to create protect that area by regulating & managing the activities around such areas. EZE’s are regulated by Central Government through Ministry of Environment, Forests & climate change.
The extent of ESZ : ESZ’s could extend upto 10 Km around a protected area. According to the 2002 guidelines, ESZ’s are formed to act as “shock absorbers” for protected areas.The basic aim is to regulate the activities around National Parks & Wildlife Scantuaries to minimize the negative impact on the fragile ecosystem around.
India has 662 wildlife Sanctuaries & National Parks. There are proposals to notify ESZ’s around 641 of them. 289 have been notified as of November 29 1018 & draft notification has been made for 206
1.Sanctuary : It is a protected area which is reserved for the conservation of only animals & human activities. Boundaries of a sanctuary are not well defined & controlled biotic interference is permitted. A sanctuary is declared for the purpose of rotecting , propagating or developing wildlife or its environment.Certain rights of people living inside the sanctuary could be permitted, like harvesting of timber, collecting minor forest products & private ownership rights are allowed as long as they do not interfere with the wellbeing of animals.
