The young Peter would enter a ministry of Justice as a clerk in 1859 (Mason 1). Tchaikovsky stayed
there four years despite the long journey to Western Europe and increasing involvement in music. In

emotional feelings in the music. The classical era brought forth a few new styles of music
composition. One is known as symphony. Symphonies are normally multi movement works(10)
containing four movements therefore resulting in dramatically longer pieces than the preceding era.
Symphony orchestras contained the string instruments. To the strings were added wind instruments,
usually the oboe and bassoon and fairly frequently the flute. The clarinet was introduced and
gradually became a regular member of the orchestra. However, the brass section(11) was not yet
introduced. The only brass instrument that was normally included was the French horn. Trumpets,
along with the timpani or kettle drums, were used only for reinforcing volume or rhythm. Another
form that developed from this era was sonata form(12) which was structured through binary
form(13). The classical suite(14) also was derived from this era. Variety of melodies, rhythms and
dynamics using crescendo, diminuendo and sforzando(15) were more commonplace in the Classical

Sergei Prokofiev's Symphony No.1, Classical Symphony, a favorite to many, is a major piece of the
orchestral repertoire. The piece was composed from 1916 to 1917 and was in a new genre; neo–
classism. This new genre was due the reaction to the expressionism and the perceived formlessness
of the late–romantic music during the time period (Whittall). In fact, the Classical Symphony is one
of the earliest works of music using the aesthetic of the neo–classical movement, and it is possibly
the earliest symphony to do so (Green). Despite being written in the early 20th century during the
midst of the Russian revolution, Prokfiev stayed true to the important aspects of pre romantic
instrumentation and structural, harmonic, and melodic styles. As previously stated, the Classical
Symphony was written in the midst of the Russian Revolutions in 1917. These revolutions were the
cause of major turning points in Russian history and Prokofiev was stuck at the heart of it in
Petrograd, the current day Saint Petersburg. Trouble during this period would begin with "protests of
thousands", escalating with food fights and fires until tsar Nicholas was abdicated (Nice, 130).
During this chain of events, Prokofiev would find himself "taking refuge from time to time behind

Mostly because when I think classical I think of faster paced pieces. That does not mean I do not
acknowledge the slower tempo pieces, it just means that I tend to listen to the quicker tempo pieces.
The first part of this symphony does have its enjoyable parts though. I did enjoy the introduction to
this symphony as it had a dark kind of feel, but then picked up by the violins. I enjoyed the second
part of the symphony particularly because of the violins striking then slowing down to a moderate

audience to be in their best clothes. The men in tuxedos with top hats on and the women in lavishing
gowns with pearl necklace. My experience sure enough prove me wrong in many ways than one.
The symphony started at three pm so I thought if we left the house by 2:30 we should be able to

Putting together a performance of a Mahler symphony, with its massive forces length, always
requires tremendous resources. As such, it can be very disappointing when, investement in these
resources result in a subpar performance. Take for example Christoph Eschenbach's performance
with L'Orchestre de Paris in 2009, which is very underwhelming, especially when compared to
Gergiev's performance with the World Orchestra for Peace at the BBC proms in 2010, based on, the
technical skill exhibited, attention to details in the score, and interpretation of emotional content.
Eschenbach's recording is extremely problematic, simply due to technical issues, specifically, having
unified entrances and maintaining tempi. This comes through immediately in the first movement.
The first entrance after the trumpet solo (m. 13) sounds almost as if the brass are playing a grace
note to the cymbal crash. This is detrimental to the power of that chord. Immediately after that, the
beat 4 pick–ups are a mess. In comparison, in Gergiev's recording those opening chords are riveting,
and with the intensity of the unified beat 4 pick–ups, the audience almost can't help but be glued to
their seats in the presence of the overbearing orchestral sound this movement calls for. Pick–ups
continue to be a problem for Eschenbach throughout the first 3 movements. This results in an
uninteresting performance of the 1st and 3rd movements because much of the character is lost.

crash cymbals. The timpani and crash cymbals are two members of the percussion section. The
timpani and crash cymbals brought back a sentimental value to me, making me feel happiness

Concert Critique #1 I have never been personally a fan of the romantic orchestra music but going to
listen to a concert live is breathtaking. I attended the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra,
Masterpieces concert with music director Fouad Fakhouri performing Igor Stravinsky's Symphony
of Psalms and Gustav Mahler's Symphony No.1 in D major. There was a full stage of musicians and
a complete choir to back it up.
The first half of the performance was a complete orchestra of woodwinds, strings, drums, brass,
excreta and a four part choir. Overall the performance took no longer than thirty minutes to play the

After a minor wobble of the director stand, a few adjustments and giggles, Symphony No.1 in D
major began. The first movement started off with an eerie introduction, with the first two notes
morphing into a birdcall as well as main theme but a very magical sound. It made for a very
soothing, romantic time. Throughout the piece I felt as if it told a story as most music does, what I
came to believe it was a love story. The Allegro begins in the cello with the second Wayfarer song,

in the beginning as if two lovers had just met, this was the main theme of this movement. Suddenly

in gowns and the men in tuxedos, while drinking wine and dancing the night away. This movement
