Natural Hazards and Disasters

Hazards Are sudden events that cannot be avoided. They are either natural or manmade, predictable or unpredictable. Hazards can involve the elements of water, wind, earth, and fire.

Disasters Are hazards that result in damage or loss of property and lives.

Types of Hazards Avalanche Coastal Flooding Cold Wave Drought Earthquake Hail Heatwave Hurricane Ice Storm Landslide Lightning Riverine Flooding Strong Wind Tornado Tsunami Volcanic Activity Wildfire Winter Weather

To avoid disasters or reduce their effects, it is important to create different escape and disaster plans for different kinds of water, land, and fire hazards. Minimizing the Effect

Technologies Avalanche Mortars Avalanche Mortars are an explosive device that are used to create small avalanches so that snow is not able to build up to the point of a catastrophic one. Seismometers Water Gauges Doppler Radar Seismometers are used to measure earthquakes by detecting vibrations in the Earth's surface. This helps to predict when earthquakes may occur. Water Gauges are used to mark the water height and can single a need for evacuation of communities If the level reaches above a certain spot. Doppler Radars send out radio waves and are used to monitor storms that can include thunderstorms, hail and tornados.

Engineering helps create solutions to help mitigate effects of Natural Hazards. From the technologies created to the ways in which homes are built engineers play an important role in helping protect communities. Engineering

Prepare a disaster kit. The basic disaster kit should contain food (in tin cans) and bottled water, a flashlight and radio with batteries, extra clothes or towels, prescribed medicines, and basic things that you need in case of emergencies. Preparedness

emergency hotlines During disasters, get ready to call these numbers to get advice, direction, information, and help. Know the different telephone numbers of your parents, family, relatives, neighbors, friends, barangay officials, rescue angency, hospital, fire department, PAGASA, PHIVOLCS and other information agencies.
