SOCIAL SCIENCE
VS.
NATURAL SCIENCE
VS.
HUMANITIES
SOCIAL SCIENCE
primary interest lies in
understanding and
explaining human
behavior both in the
individual and collective
level.
NATURAL SCIENCE
Natural science, on the other hand,
studies and explains systematically
the occurrence of all natural
phenomena based from a scientist's
investigation of material entities in
an experimentally-controlled
condition.
HUMANITIES
Humanities on the other hand, seeks
to understand human response and
reaction to events including the
different meaning that they give on
human experience "as a function of
culture, Historical era, and life
history" (Kagan 2009, 4).
THE CHARACTERISTICS OF
SOCIAL SCIENCE
1. social science examines human
relationships and behavior and its
influences to people around them. It
studies the nature of both individual and
collective human behavior because it
explains "what people do?", “who people
are?”, and “What do people prefer”.
2. social science is a scientific study that
investigates and discovers the nature of
human society through the application of
logical and systematic methods. Social
science ascertains new facts on one hand,
and on the other hand, discredits myths
and old knowledge, and reexamines
outdated facts.
3. social science is logical because it uses
the rules of logic to explain and assess
inferences derived from certain
propositions. Social science applies
inductive logic or deductive logic to answer
questions about the social world.
4. social science is deterministic
because it explains the occurrences of
events due to a particular reason or
cause.
5. social science provides solutions to
social problems. Social scientists
study human society in order to
understand social phenomena,
problems, and relevant social issues
that it faces
6. social sciences, all facts,
theories, hypothesis and
propositions that explain the
nature of the social world are
empirically verifiable
