Unit-I Introduction Definition of Sociology Nature and Scope of Sociology Significance of sociology in nursing

INTRODUTION Sociology is a branch of social science which deals with society and its connection with the people, the word sociology first coined by a French Philosopher, August comte . The word sociology was derived from the latin word ‘ societus ’ which means ‘society’ and the greeek wird ‘logos’ means study.

Sociology will provide an in-depth knowledge about the behaviour of people in diferent societies at diferent places and time. It also aims at studying the social cause and consequences on society on human bhaviour . Sociology mainly deals with society and culture in connction with people

Society and culture are two sides of coin. They are inseperable . A society is a group of people who interact with each other ,share their opinions and thoughts and cuture . A culture is a practice being practiced in many societis , where people share their belief, values and norms.

Definitions: Sociology is defined as the study of human values, relationships, beliefs and society. Socioogy is a systematic approach to thinking about, studying and understanding society, human social behaviour and social group -Farley

NATURE OF SOCIOLOGY

1.Sociology is an independent science Sociology is a branch of social science but it has its own consequences and freedom. It acts independently involving all the factor of society. So sociogy is considered a as an independent discipline.

2.Sociology is about society and culture Society is a large group of people who have direct or indirect contact with the culture . The culture is about sharing language, thughts , belief and experiences. 3.Sociology is the study of human social structure. Sociology is about human behavuor ad its conection with society and its various faces, thus sociology explores about the human social structure where human and socity are driven by the call of culture.

4. Sociology focuses on groups : Sociology is about people who live in groups rather than individuals because group of people constitutes a society and all the aspects of sociology is based on the groups, and its deep rooted association with society.

5. Sociology focuses on pattern of social relationships; Sociology focuses on diferent types of social relationships because this is the area where sociology stands out in its individuality. In a society, there are a lot of changes of behaviours and values, and this is the area o sociology focuses more.

THANKS

6.Sociology is a social science, not a natural science:   As a social science it deals with human  beings and social phenomena. It concentrates on a man’s social behavior, social activities and social life. It is closely related to other social sciences like anthropology, political science, psychology and economics.

7.Sociology is a pure science, not an applied science : The main aim of pure science is acquisition of knowledge while that of an applied science is its application or utilization. Sociology does not deal with practical works. It simply observes the society in a theoretical way and studies the factors underlying  various social phenomena. It never determines questions of public policy or recommends any legislation. However, the knowledge acquired by a sociologist is of great help to the administrators, legislators, social workers and citizens.

8.Sociology is an abstract science,  not a concrete science :  Sociology studies the society in general and does not confine itself to the study of particular events. It studies abstract forms of human events and their patterns such as marriage, religion, family, group, etc.

9.Sociology is a science of generalization, not a particularizing or an individualizing science :  Sociology tries to determine general laws or principles about human interaction and association, structure of human groups and societies. It tries to make generalizations on the basis of the study of some selected events. It does not study social phenomena from a particular angle.

10.Sociology is both rational and an empirical science :  There are two broad ways of approach to scientific knowledge. Empiricism is an approach that emphasizes experience and the facts that result from observation and experimentation. Rationalism stresses on reasoning and logical inferences. An empiricist collects facts whereas a rationalist coordinates and arranges them. Sociologists avail both empirical and rational resources.
