What is a Need?
•Gap or difference between existing
condition and desired condition
•Example: “We need to place more
emphasis on technology in our adult
education curriculum.”
•Other words, a discrepancy exist
between existing curriculum and
desired curriculum.

Educational Need:
Gap between existing level of
knowledge or skill and a desired level
of knowledge or skill (Knowles, 1980).
The learning required to achieve a
desired level of knowledge or skill in a
learner.

Assessment:
•“Assess” is Latin term meaning “sit
beside.”
•Process-minded and facilitative adult
educators “sit beside” learners to learn
about their
•Proficiencies (skills)
•Backgrounds
•Educational goals
•Expected outcomes
•Immersing themselves in the lives
and views of their students
(Auerbach, 1994).
What is a needs
assessment?
•A TOOL that examines, from
the learners perspective,
•Felt need (wants, desires,
and wishes).
•Expressions of preference
or desire by learners.
Learning Needs and
Health Problems
They represent areas where education
or training can improve a person's
ability to take care of themselves. Here
are some examples:
•A patient with a new asthma
diagnosis:Their learning needs might
include understanding how to use an
inhaler properly, recognizing asthma
triggers, and knowing what steps to
take during an asthma attack.
Cont;
A parent of a child with Type 1 diabetes:
Their learning needs might involve
understanding how to administer insulin
injections, monitor blood sugar levels, and
create a healthy meal p

(poverty.etc)

6•Hybrid Models
Key
Informa
nt Model
•Key assumptions
•Key informants are
knowledgeable of targeted
audience “needs”
•Needs identified should
coincide with views of
targeted audience.
Community Forum Model
Gathering perceptions of
targeted groups or
individuals.
Free-flowing discussion that
has potential to produce
most accurate picture of felt
needs.
Social Indicators Model
Utilizes secondary data
sources.
Statistical data from
governmental agencies
Newspapers, magazine,
industry newsletters
Should NOT be viewed as
adequate replacement for
first-hand information.
Survey Model
EMPLOYED WHERE
TARGET AUDIENCE
IS WELL-DEFINED
AND ACCESSIBLE.
ADVANTAGE -DATA
GATHERED
DIRECTLY FROM
POTENTIAL
PARTICIPANTS.
Critical Incident Model
Participants provide a
written statement
identifying incident that
caused them great
discomfort, pressure, or
difficulty.
Details include
When and where it occurred
Who was involved (roles not
personalities)
What made it significant to
cause them a problem.
Hybrid
Models:
•Combinations of models
for a specific targeted adult
education program can be
beneficial.
•Maximizes reliability and
validity of needs
assessment.
Surveys:
•Usually a questionnaire
•Information regarding
potential audience
•Demographics
•Perception of need
•Ability to participate
Interviews:
•Personal, telephone,
electronic
•Seeks same
information as
survey
Standards:
•Professional associations
and accrediting bodies
provide standards that must
be met.
•Example
•ISO
Observation:
•Observing potential
participants at a skill or
activity that can be
measured visually.
•Provides on-the-job
assessment.
Suggestion Box:
•Very basic needs assessment.
•Complaints-whether
received through suggestion
box or not can serve as
assessment tools.
How This All Fits In
Nursing
Think of needs assessments as the
detective work before a nurse
creates a care plan or health
education program. Here are some
examples:
•Patient Education:Assessing a
newly diagnosed diabetic patient's
knowledge and skills about their
condition before creating an
educational program.
Cont;
•Community Health:Identifying gaps in a
community's understanding of immunization
to design an effective awareness campaign.
•Staff Development:Assessing the training
needs of nurses in a specific ward to plan
professional development programs.
