Anatomy
Endocrinology Endocrine glands are glands of the endocrine system that secrete their products, hormones , directly into interstitial spaces where they are absorbed into blood rather than through a duct. The major glands of the endocrine system include the pineal gland , pituitary gland , pancreas , ovaries , testes , thyroid gland , parathyroid gland , hypothalamus and adrenal glands . The hypothalamus and pituitary gland are neuroendocrine organs .
Growth Growth refers to irreversible increase in mass or overall size of a tissue, an organism, or its parts. Growth occurs when anabolism or synthetic processes exceed catabolism. Increase in mass of cells and increase in number of cells are twin characters of growth Plants grow continuously and this growth is by cell division. The process of cell division is also observed in certain plant parts only Animal’s growth occurs only up to a certain age. Unicellular organisms grow by cell division, but being unicellular, as the organism grows, it divides into two new organisms e.g., Amoeba. Hence, growth and reproduction are synonymous to each other. In majority of higher plants and animals growth and reproduction are mutually exclusive events
Non-living objects may also demonstrate growth like increase in body mass (can be taken as a criterion of growth). But nonliving objects show only extrinsic growth i.e., increase in the mass of body from outside e.g. sand dunes, mountains, etc. y Growth is observed in both living and nonliving beings hence, cannot be taken as a defining property of living organisms.
Sympatric speciation is an evolutionary phenomenon where new species arise from a common ancestor within the same geographic location, without physical separation. This contrasts with allopatric speciation, which involves geographical barriers. Key mechanisms driving sympatric speciation include polyploidy, sexual selection, and niche differentiation. Examples include the diversity of cichlid fishes and the apple maggot fly's potential speciation.
What is a Herbarium? Actually, it’s a collection of plant specimens preserved, labeled and stored in an organized manner that facilitates access. You can think of it as a library of dried plant specimens used for both education and research. Typically , the plants are flattened, dried and mounted on uniformly sized, archival paper, but some herbaria also include mosses, algae, fungi or lichens in archival paper packets, seeds, wood sections, pollen, microscope slides, DNA extractions or jars of plant parts preserved in alcohol or glycerin.
