A jar contains a piece
of the skin and
subcutaneous tissue :
•A large whitish
cauliflower mass arising
from the skin surface.
•multiple compound
papillary projections;
each of them is
connected to the skin
surface by a pedicle.
•No invasion of the
subcutaneous tissue.
•No surface ulceration.
Thyroid (solitary
thyroid nodule:
A jar contains a solitary
(single) thyroid nodule cut
into two halves:
The nodule is :
•About 4x4 cm in diameter.
•Firm in consistency.
•Well encapsulated by
fibrous tissue capsule.
•Brownish in color with
gelatinous brownish colloid.

Squamous cell carcinoma
of the scalp (nodular type)
A jar contains 2 pieces of the
skin of the scalp and
underlying bone of skull.
• There is a large nodular
tumour mass, arising from
the skin of the scalp and
infiltrating the underlying
tissue and skull bone to
appear from its inner
surface.
The cut section shows an
opaque grayish white nodule
eroding the bone.
Squamous cell carcinoma
of the scalp (malignant
ulcer)
A jar contains a piece of the
skin of the scalp showing:
• Large irregular ulcerating
mass, greysih brown in
colour.
•the ulcer shows the typical
criteria of malignant
ulcer:
1.Single.
2.Irregular.
3.raised everted edges
4.rough necrotic floor.
5.The base of the ulcer is
fixed and indurated .
The cut section shows invasion
of underlying tissue.
Adenocarcinoma of the large
intestine with secondaries in
the regional LN (Fungating;
exophytic type)
•A jar contains terminal ileum,
coecum, appendix and part of the
ascending colon.
•There is large fungating
cauliflower grayish white mass
with necrotic ulcerating surface
projecting from the lumen of the
coecum and infiltrating the wall.
•The mass is infiltrating the
underlying colonic wall evidenced
by the interruption of the muscle
layer.
•The pericolic lymph nodes
showed metastatic deposits.
Stenosing
adenocarcinoma of the
colon (endophytic
stricture type)
A jar contains a colonic
segment cut
longitudinally.
•The lumen is narrowed,
and even completely
obliterated in some areas,
by grayish brown
infiltrating tumor tissue.
•The muscle layer of the
colon is interrupted
opposite the stenosing
mass, indicating invasion.
Adenocarcinoma of the
large intestine
(endophytic ulcerative
type)
A jar contains a colonic
segment.
• The mucosa in the middle
part is lost completely and
replaced by an ulcerating
malignant mass, with the
following criteria:
•raised everted edges
• necrotic floor.
•The base of the ulcer is
fixed and indurated .
(criteria of malignant ulcer)
Metastatic liver secondaries
from carcinoma:
A jar contains a slice of liver tissue.
• The outer and cut surface of the
liver shows multiple nodules with
the following criteria:
1.Yellowish in colour.
2. uniform in size and shape.
3.Distributed homogenously all
over the cut surface.
4.Some of them show umbilication.
The liver tissue shows irregular
areas of yellowish discolouration
due to obstructive jaundice.
1. Subcutaneous Lipoma.
2.Uterine Leiomyoma.
A jar contains defined
subcutaneous tumor mass
bulging above the surface of
the skin.
•Well encapsulated.
•Shape: rounded or oval.
•Size: 4-6 cm in diameter.
•Cut surface: yellowish
&lobulated.
•Covering skin: thin &
atrophic.
• The fatty lobules are
separated by strands of
whitish fibrous tissue.
Subcutaneous Subcutaneous
LipomaLipoma
A jar contains a uterus cut
longitudinally into two halves.
The outer surface is irregular and
nodular.
The cut surface shows the following:
Multiple nodular areas variable in
size (leiomyomata).
Some are located in the interstitial
region; others are subserous or
submucous.
Their cut sections show bundles of
smooth muscle fibers arranged in
concentric manner taking whorly
appearance; and are separated by
bands of whitish fibrous tissue
running in different directions.
The uterine cavity is compressed
and distorted with atrophic thinned
out endometrium.
Multiple uterine leiomyomata

of the heart.
2)Secondaries (metastasis) of malignant melanoma in the pancreas.
3)Metastasis (secondaries) of malignant melanoma of the liver.
Secondaries (metastasis)
of malignant melanoma
of the heart
A jar contains a heart.
• multiple dark brownish
nodules are seen in the
pericardial surfaces, on
the external and inernal
surfaces of great vessels,
and myocardial surface.
•Nodules representing
metastatic malignant
melanoma.
Secondaries (metastasis) of malignant melanoma in the pancreas
A jar contains a part of the pancreas.
• Two rounded black nodules are seen in the cut section representing
metastatic nodules from malignant melanoma.
Metastasis (secondaries) of
malignant melanoma of the
liver
A jar contains a piece of liver
tissue.
•The outer surface and cut
surface of the liver show
multiple blackish nodules that
are:
1.Well-defined.
2.Variable in size and shape.
3.Some shows umbilication.
