LECTURER:UMAR TARIQ MSC ANAESTHESIA/OTT NEPHRECTOMY

NEPHRECTOMY Nephrectomy is the surgical removal of a kidney( nephro =kidney and ectomy=removal). The procedure is done to treat kidney cancer as well as other kidney diseases and injuries. Nephrectomy is also done to remove a healthy kidney from a donor for transplantation.

TYPES There are two types of nephrectomy for a diseased kidney Partial Radical

Partial nephrectomy: In partial nephrectomy , only the diseased or injured portion of the kidney is removed . Radical nephrectomy : involves removing the entire kidney, along with the section of ureter, adrenal gland and the fatty tissue surrounding the kidney. When both the kidneys are removed at the same time, the procedure is called bilateral nephrectomy

BULLDOG ARTERIAL CLAMP It is an essential instrument during surgery where blood flow to an organ must be stopped or controlled. It is also used in coronary surgery to control bleeding. Bulldog clamp comes in variety of sizes and shapes. Also used in ophthalmology procedures.

SELF RETAINING RETRACTOR Very strong instrument. These are mainly used in long surgeries where retraction required for a long time. Main advantage of these retractors are, that it can be adjusted and fixed at a required retraction. Self retaining retractors allow hands free operation during a surgery. Also used to hold tissue or organs out of the way during surgery

KIDNEY PEDICLE CLAMP It is used to clamp thick tissues. Mayo – Guyon kidney clamp is most commonly used in urological procedures where heavy tissue or organ need to be held. These are also called haemostatic forceps. These are also used to clamp the renal pedicle during resection of the tumour. These are commonly used in nephrectomy.
