TYPES OF NETWORK By- JEEVAN RAO ARAVINDHAN LOGESH 10/17/2024 1

TYPES OF NETWORK BASED ON GEOGRAPHICAL SPREAD LAN (LOCAL AREA NETWORK) WAN (WIDE AREA NETWORK) PAN (PERSONAL AREA NETWORK) MAN (METROPOLITAN AREA NETWORK) 10/17/2024 2

LOCAL AREA NETWORK

NOTE: Some key features of LANS are : They can extend upto 1km. Data transfer rates are high in LANS (10Mbps to 1Gbps) LANS often connect hosts through wires like Ethernet cables , fibre optics or through wifi . 10/17/2024 5

WIDE AREA NETWORK

Note: Largest WAN in existence is known as Internet. Internet is a giant WAN. The web is also an WAN . Please note that Web (world wide web) is a part of Internet, not the complete Internet. 10/17/2024 8

METROPOLITAN AREA NETWORK (MAN)

MAN A Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) is a computer network that spans a metropolitan area, such as a city or town. It connects multiple Local Area Networks (LANs) and Wide Area Networks (WANs) together, providing high-speed connectivity over a larger geographic area than a LAN, but smaller than a WAN.
MANs typically cover an area of around 50 kilometers (31 miles) in diameter and are often used by organizations that require high-speed connectivity across a city or metropolitan area. 10/17/2024 10

Note: MAN technologies include:
1. Fiber optic cables
2. Ethernet
3. WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access)
4. Metro Ethernet
MANs provide benefits like:
1. High-speed connectivity
2. Reliability
3. Security
4. Scalability
MANs are often used for applications like:
1. Data center connectivity
2. Cloud computing
3. Video conferencing
4. Online gaming

PERSONAL AREA NETWORK (PAN)

Pans are often used for: 1. Wireless connectivity between devices (e.g., Bluetooth, Wi-Fi Direct)
2. File sharing and synchronization
3. Device control and communication (e.g., keyboard, mouse, speaker)
4. Wearable devices and IoT (Internet of Things) devices
