INTRODUCTION Theodore M. Newcomb is one of the pioneers in the establishment of social psychology as an area for the study at the periphery between the traditional disciplines of psychology and sociology. Theodore M. Newcomb’s Model, unlike any other models takes the shape of triangle. The main significance of this model is that, it makes an attempt to provide an explanation regarding the role of communication in the society and in social relationships. According to this model, communication processes renders a significant contribution in maintaining equilibrium within the social relationships.
ABOUT THE MODEL In this model, the communication among the individuals is focused upon the social environment within the social environment. There are number of aspects, in terms of which communication processes can be facilitated among individuals. This model is regarded as significant in the light of the individuals increasing needs and requirements. In fact, when the individuals are residing in the democratic country. It is vital for them to generate awareness and augment their understanding in terms of factors of the social environment. This information should be assisting to them in providing solutions to their problems and enriching in their lives. Through this model, the individuals are able to understand, how important it is for them to form effective communication terms within the social environment.
WORKING OF MODEL The Newcomb’s model works in a triangular format or A-B-X system A – Sender B – Receiver X – Matter of Concern The relationship between A and B is like student and teacher, government and public or newspaper and readers. Sender and Receiver may work in a same flow but the same time some factor like “X” may affect their flow of relationship. “X” it may be third persons, issue, topic or policy. For Example : Teachers introduce a new policy to increase the college timing from 6 hours to 8 hours. A – Teachers B – Students X – Policy or issue If both students and teachers are satisfied with this policy then the communication maintains its equilibrium status between them. Otherwise the flow of communication between “A” and “B” becomes trouble in the social system. If “A” or “B” is not ready to accept the policy then it will directly affect the social system and can’t maintain the equilibrium status. So Teachers “A” can convince students “B” as much as possible. Otherwise they have to make some adjustments in the Policy “X” and convince them towards the policy.
ADVANTAGES THE TWO MAIN ADVANTAGES OF NEWCOMB’S COMMUNICATION MODEL ARE:- This model is basically focused on the message. Its main objective is to maintain equilibrium within the social relationships.
DISADVANTAGES THE TWO MAIN DISADVANTAGES OF NEWCOMB’S COMMUNICATION MODEL ARE:- The message can be manipulated easily. In this model, there is no discussion about barriers of communication.
POINTS TO BE DISCUSSED According to Marshall McLuhan, who was a Canadian philosopher:- MESSAGE IS A MEDIUM. TV IS A COOL MEDIUM WHEREAS RADIO IS A HOTTER MEDIUM.
