Local Hero Saves Child from River Yesterday afternoon, a local man, James Turner, became a hero after rescuing an 8-year-old boy from the fast-moving waters of the River Thames in downtown Oxford. The boy had fallen in while playing near the riverbank with his friends. The incident occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. Witnesses say that the boy, named Tom Miller, slipped on a wet rock and fell into the river. His friends shouted for help, attracting the attention of Mr. Turner, who was walking his dog nearby. Without hesitation, Mr. Turner jumped into the water and swam towards the struggling child. "I didn't think twice," said Mr. Turner. "I knew I had to help him.“ Emergency services arrived shortly after the boy was pulled to safety. Paramedics treated Tom for shock and cold, but he did not suffer any serious injuries. "We are incredibly grateful to Mr. Turner for his bravery," said a spokesperson for the Oxford Fire and Rescue Service. "If he hadn’t acted so quickly, this could have had a very different outcome.“ Tom's family expressed their thanks to Mr. Turner and the emergency services. "We are so thankful that he was there at the right moment," said Tom's mother, Emily Miller. "He saved our son's life.“ The rescue has sparked calls for better safety measures along the riverbank, including warning signs and barriers. The local council is expected to discuss possible improvements in the coming weeks By Sarah Johnson, Reporter
