INTRODUCTION A breast self examination is the examination of breast by self to detect early pathological changes.
CON…. It is often used as an early detection method for breast cancer.
CON…. A breast self-examination is a way anyone can check own breasts for any changes such as lump or thickenings that could be symptomatic of breast cancer.
CON… Both men and women should perform a breast self examination at least once each month beginning at age 20.
DEFINITION Breast self examination is a screening method used in an attempt to detects early breast cancer.
CON… The method involves the women herself looking at and felling each breast for possible lumps , redness, swelling.
PURPOSE / IMPORTANCE To identify breast tissue for any physical or visual changes. To early detection methods for breast cancer. Both men or women should perform a BSE at least once each month beginning at age 18.
CON… To maintain body posture. To reduce incidence of breast cancer. BSE is helpful during pregnancy to screen breast preparation for lactation. To cost benefit. To improve quality of life.
TIMING FOR BSE The best time to do monthly self breast examination is about 3-5 days after your periods starts. Do it same times every/month.
CON… In case you do notice lump, then please do not panic consult with doctor. In case of pregnancy , menopause or irregular menstrual cycle a specific date of month should be chosen for examination.
POSITION BSE can be performed when lying in down on the back and in standing position.
STEPS STEP-1 Stand in front of mirror and look at your naked breast.
CON… Check for changes like color, size, & shape. If you observe any of following changes, consult a Dr. immediately Changes of positions of nipples or inverted. Any swelling, redness, & soreness.
CON… STEP-2 Place your hands on your waist and press inward, then turn from side to side to note any changes.
CON… BSE should be regularly performed by every woman such as pregnant breast, breastfeeding and menopausal woman, or have breast implants. In case you to notice lump, then please do not panic consult with Dr. to proper education.
CON… STEP-3 Place your hands behind your head and press forward.
CON… Once again, turn from side to side and look for changes. Large breasted woman will need to take two fingers of the opposite hand to lift and look.
CON… STEP-4 Place your hands on your waist, and bow towards the mirror, letting the breast falls forward. Note any change in breast shape.
CON… STEP-5 Nipple discharge also can be a sign of a breast problem.
CON… Gently squeeze the breast tissue surrounding the nipple between the thumb and middle finger and check for nipple discharge .
CON… STEP-6 While taking a bath or shower, feel above and below the collar bone for any enlarged lymph nodes.
CON… STEP-7 From the collar bone, rub down firmly to the nipple of one breast, felling for any lumps, thickening or changes from previous examinations.
CON… STEP-8 Next, supports the breast with one hand while the other hand and fingers slide across top of breast feeling for lumps.
CON… STEP-9 Check for lymph node or lumps under your arm while relaxing your arm at your side.
CON… Reach across with your other hand to feel the area. Reach across with your other hand to feel the area. Note any changes from previous examination. Repeat on the other side.
CON… STEP-10 Lie down a just roll to your left side to examine the right breast.
CON… Rest your other arm in your forehead to ensure breast should be flat to your chest if you want to comfortable then just put a pillow under your shoulder or back.
CON… Now using the flat tips of your fingers press in circular motion on side, middle and underside the intensity should first be light, then medium & deep motion. Repeat the steps on your left breasts.
CON… STEP-11 Move your hand in increasingly smaller circles until the entire breast is covered.
CON… STEP-12 Place your fingers flat on the nipple and depress, feeling beneath for any changes.
CON… Now, reverse your hands and the pillow to repeat the exam on the right breast. If you find a lump or change in breast does not mean you have cancer, report to health professional promptly. Menstruating women should do BSE one week after their menstrual periods begins when breast are less lumpy and tender.
CON… Pregnant women should check their breasts on the same day each month. Breastfeeding mothers should check their breasts on the same day each month after emptying the breasts. Women who take hormone replacement therapy should do BSE on the same day every month.
INDICATIONS Complaints of breast pain. Skin changes. Nipple discharge. Lumps. Gross changes in size or shapes. Breast lump developing during pregnancy or lactation.
ADVANTAGES Women can use BSE to assess their breasts. When they perform BSE properly and regularly, they can notice any changes in their breasts and seek further evaluation .
CON… Allows the women to know about the health of their breasts. In a non-invasive, simple procedure. Awareness of breast anatomy.
DISADVANTAGES Fear and anxiety about what may be found during the examination .
