BRIEF HISTORY ABOUT IITA IITA is an award-winning, research-for-development (R4D) organization, providing solutions to hunger, poverty, and the degradation of natural resources in Africa. Since 1967, IITA has worked with international and national partners to improve livelihoods, enhance food and nutrition security, increase employment, and preserve natural resource integrity. To help address poverty and the high number of unemployed young men and women in sub-Saharan Africa, IITA has initiated a Youth Agripreneurs program to create jobs by making agriculture and agribusiness appealing to the youth.
INTRODUCTION NoduMax is a bio-fertilizer and legume inoculant specifically designed to promote biological nitrogen fixation for soybean seeds. The application of NoduMax in conjunction with recommended fertilizers results in a 450kg yield increase per hectare. This shows an increase in yield of between 30-40%. Nodumax has sold over 35 tons to more than 70,000 farmers across Nigeria, Ghana, Benin, Gambia, Mozambique, and other African countries. The active ingredient for nodumax is Bradyrhizobium Japonicum NODUMAX
COMPONENTS FOR DIFFERENT MEDIA PREPARATION AND THEIR MEASUREMENT . YEAST MANNITOL BROTH (YMB) -K2HPO4 -0.5G -MgSO47H2O – 0.2g -Nacl – 0.1g -Yeast Extract -0.5g -Mannitol -10g - Distilled H20 – 1litre YEAST MANNITOL AGAR/CONGO RED - All YMB chemical components - Agar -15g - Congo Red -10ml NUTRIENT AGAR -Nutrient Agar -28g -Distilled H20 – 1litre

Preparation of Yeast Mannitol Broth ( 17Litres YMB) All chemicals component are weighed. The PH electrode was cleaned using sterile water and wipe with tissue paper. The meter was calibrated using buffer 4 and buffer 7, then the PH value of the media was checked (PH value must be 6.8. if low, HCL was used to increase the valve, if high, NAOH is used to reduce the value. The jar was topped up to 17litres of distill water using calibrated container. The mouth of the jar was corked with two inlet rod and wrapped around with cotton wool and foil to prevent boiling out. The media was sterilized for 20minutues at 121⁰c and allowed to cool to room temperature PROCEDURES IN MODUMAX PRODUCTION
INJECTION The tip of the needle was flamed before inserting into the sterile peat, equal ratio (1:1) was dispensed. After injection, it was covered with tough tag and polythene tape and then massaged thoroughly so that rhizobium is evenly distributed, it was allowed to cure for 15days before Quality test. INOCULATION Starter culture was transferred into the sterile YMB using the tycoon tube. The attached end of the tubing was connected to the rod. through this process, culture is transferred into the bottle. Sterile filter is then attached to the rod with 3mm tygoon tube. The inoculated bottle was then labelled for proper identification before aeration PROCEDURES CONTD.

MASSAGING This is the process where injected sterile peat is being massaged thoroughly for evenly distribution of rhizobia in the sachet. This is only done manually by rubbing and squeezing the sachet ensuring that all sides are moistening. This is then transferred into the curing room to cure (rhizobia multiplication) for 15days. QUALITY CONTROL TEST This is the process where samples are being tested for contaminant and rhizobia count in a set/batch of product. Quality control ascertain the required count expected in each sample. This will help to know if the product conform to the standard of the product. Media used in checking for the quality of samples is Congo Red while Nutrient Agar is the media used to check for contaminant in a sample. PROCEDURES CONTD.

PACKAGING AND BOXING This is the process where free contaminated inoculant is packed into zip lock sachet with a gum Arabic and leaflet instruction in 3 languages which are hausa , igbo and yoruba. The inoculant sachet has the batch number , production date and expiration date printed on it for proper identification. It has a shelf life of 18month. 50 sachets of inoculant is arranged into cartoons and stored in a cold room . Inoculant boxing Inoculant PROCEDURES CONTD.
HOW TO USE NODUMAX INOCULANT Get 10kg soybean seed, Dissolve 20g of Gum Arabic in warm water, pour into the 10kg soybean seed prepared. Mix thoroughly until the soybean get sticky. Allow to stay for 1min, then pour the 100g of inoculant into the already sticky soybean seed. Mix thoroughly to coat the seed, allow to stay for 3-5minute under a shady environment. Plant immediately after all seed is coated evenly. Ensure you plant all , do not have left over for planting.
How to use NoduMax
CONCLUSION Nodumax inoculant is produced for the purpose of small holder farmers to have high yield increase after planting. It is expected that after planting, nodumax will increase yield productivity to about 40%. Research had made it know that USDA110 ( Bradyrhizobium japonicum )is effective in the nitrogen fixation of soybean plant. It is proven with some farmers that there are positive residual effect on maize specifically on yield.
