Non-Verbal Communication (NVC) Communication without words Communication with gestures, postures and facial expressions. Wordless expression of words.

Interpretation of Language

Kinesics Includes the gestures, postures and facial expressions. The most powerful means to express oneself. The hands gestures should match the words.

Facial Expressions They reflect the expressions of happiness, excitement, enthusiasm, fear, anger, sadness, worry on an individuals face.

Proxemics The distance between the communicators. Formally one arm distance should be maintained. The proximity between the communicators shows : Eithers the parties are very close. Or they are in closed conversation.

Paralanguage The voice pitch, tone, intonations and expressions. Rate of communication. Articulation, pronunciation and pauses.

Haptic Is used when we touch someone during communication. Handshake, embracing/cuddling, patting, high-five etc. A touch may be consciously exercised in a professional environment. People may take it otherwise as well.

Oculesics Studies the eye behaviour in communication. Eye contact, dilation of pupil, winking, blinking Raising eyebrows, movement of eye ball. Refers to the interest taken in the communication. Reflects domineering, threatening and influencing others. Denotes confidence of the speaker. Although staring may denote intimidation or flirting.

Chronemics The study of time and is divided into: Biological Personal Physical Cultural A lso denotes the time length of talking. The timeliness of people in arriving. The time given for waiting to meet someone.

Similarities with Verbal Communication It is also symbolic like verbal communication. It is also governed by certain rules. The rules are mutually governed upon. It may intentional or unintentional It is subjective and leaves way for interpretation. It is also culture bound and reflects values.

Dissimilarities with Verbal Communicaiton Body language never lies and is more trustworthy. It has multiple channels for exhibition. It is a continuous form of communication.

Principles of NVC Repeating : Pointing to an object to refer something Conflicting : In case of deceptive movements. Complimenting : When they enhance the words. Substituting : When words are not required Regulating : When need to signal something. Moderating : When these amplify or accent the speech.
