Notations and Symbols

Notations and Symbols The difference of x and 4 is 8 Five times y is less than 30 The quotient of x and 3 is equal to the sum of x and 2 The sum of 3 times c and 4 is more than 12. The product of 5 an dy is greater than or equal to the difference of y and 16

First expand and then find the solution

3-1 Integers and Absolute value

Go around the classroom and stand next to your answer.

3-1 Integers and Absolute value An Integer is any number from the set {....,-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3,....} Positive integers are greater than 0. Negative integers are less than 0.

Absolute value Absolute value of an integer is its distance from zero on the number line. The absolute value of a number is never negative . Example the absolute value of is

Real Numbers IMPORTANT POINTS: The numbers that can be represented with points on the real number line are called real numbers Fractions that represent the same number are said to be equivalent . They look different but have the same value. has the same value as Numbers that have the same distance from zero, but in opposite diretions from zero, are called opposites. Example the opposite of 3 is -3. Two numbers whose product is 1 are called reciprocals. Example: The reciprocal of 3 is An expression that contains any combination of numbers, variables, operation symbols and grouping symbols is called an Algebraic expression.   13/8/2024

Linear equations & Graphs Any equation that can be put in the form where a,b, and c are real numbers and a and b are not both , is called Linear equation. The graph of a linear equation is always a straight line. The standard form of linear equation is: If an ordered pair is a solution to the equation then the coordinates used in the place of variables must satisfy the equation. Example ordered pair of (3,2) satisfies the equation y = 3x+2

To graph a Linear Equation in two variables Step 1: Find atleast 3 ordered pairs Step 2: Graph the 3 ordered pairs. We require only two ordered pairs to graph a straight line. Third point serves as a check. Draw a straight line throught these points. Any equation of the form y=mx has a graph that passes through the origin. Any equation of the form x=a has a vertical line for its graph. Any equation of the form y =a has a horizontal line for its graph.

Graphing Intercepts The x – intercept is the x-coordinate of the point where the graph crosses the x-axis. If the x-intercept is ‘ a’ , then the point is (a,0) The y – intercept is the y-coordinate of the point where the graph crosses the y-axis . If the y-intercept is ‘ b’ , then the point is (0,b)
