Music exist because it is heard. It is heard because it is sung. It is sung because it is written . It is written because it is expressed. It is expressed because it is lived . It is lived because it exhales notes to produce sounds And inhales rests for silences to sustain the heartbeat of life.

What is Rhythm? Rhythm is defined as the heartbeat of music that gives the regular occurrence of sound and silences. It is the combination of sound and silences.

Notes and Rest in Rhythm Sound represent note and silence represent rest . Sound and silence are part of rhythm. Without either one of these, there would never be rhythm .

Kinds of Notes and Rest

Whole note, with its corresponding rest symbol, has the greatest value or number of beats which is four beats or count. It is followed by Half note or half rest with two counts. Next is quarter note with shaded head, which has one count. A note with a hook or flag attached to the stem is the eighth note with 1/2 count. The last is the sixteenth note with two hooks or flag and has 1/4 count.

Meter is used to measure the time in each music bar as signal by the strong and weak beats. Meters are conductor’s guide in leading the choir or orchestra for a music performance. There are three meters that music conductors follow. These are the duple , triple and quadruple . What is Meter in music?

Duple came from the Latin word “ duplus ” means double or two. The time signature having a duple meter are 2/2, 2/4, 6/8, and 6/4.

Triple came from the Latin word “ triples ” means three beats in a measure. The time signature having triple meter are 3/2, 3/4, 9/8, and 9/4.

Quadruple came from the Latin word “ quintuplus ” means four beats. The time signature having quadruple meter are 4/2, 4/4, 4/8 and 12/8
