(2) Transported soils
Residual Soils
Residual soils are found at the same location where they have

to 20 m.
Transported Soils
Weathered rock materials can be moved from their original site

The foundation is the lower part of a structure that
transmits the weight of the structure on to the natural
ground.
Types of foundation

Mat foundation
Deep foundation
In deep foundation the depth to width ratio is usually
greater than 4. Eg pile foundation. pier foundation and wells
or cassons foundations are deep foundation.
Factors Affecting the foundation
•The function of structure.
•The load that foundation can carry
•Need of owner
•The sub-surface condition
•Cost of foundation compairing with super structure
•Service life
•Margine of safety
•Risk level
•Environmental consideration
•Constructability etc.
