Nutritional assessment Definition – The strategy to determine the extent and severity of nutritional problems is called nutritional assessment or assessment of nutritional status. Objectives of nutritional assessment- To determine the type, magnitude and distribution of malnutrition in different geographical area. To identify at risk groups and to determine the community factors.
Goal of nutritional assessment To discover facts about nutritional situation and guide action to improve nutrition and health. To combat malnutrition, assessment of nutritional status of community is the first step. To obtain allocation of material and human resources and plan appropriate intervention strategies.
Methods of nutritional assessment Nutritional assessment can be done using the ABCD method. These refer to following – A- anthropometry B- biochemical or biophysical method C- clinical method D- dietary method
Anthropometry measurements method To assess the growth in children nurses use several different measurements including length , height, weight and circumference. These measurements must be taken accurately using reliable equipment and correct measuring techniques.
Biochemical or biophysical method Biochemical tests have been widely utilised to learn more about what happens to nutrients level in blood, urine or tissues. When nutrients are inadequate or excessively consumed. Hemoglobin estimation Biochemical method
Clinical method Clinical method of assessing nutritional status involve checking signs of deficiency at specific place one the body or asking the patient whether they have any smyptoms that might suggest nutrition deficiency from the patient.
Dietary method Dietary method of assessment Include looking at past or current intakes of nutrients from food by individual or a group to determine their nutritional status.
CONCLUSION Nutritional assessment must be simple, effective And adapted in order to allow early and effective nutritional management. These various appropriate methods use to assess the nutritional level in an individual or group or community.
