What is obesity ? medical condition that occurs when a person carries excess weight or body fat that might affect their health. i s highly related to body nutrition and related factors. A person's healthy lifestyle greatly influences his ability to overcome obesity . For example; consumption of nutritious food such as fruits, vegetables etc is generally recommended by the doctors to have gradual extra weight loss.
Cause of Obesity -cause of obesity is complex Intake calories > calories burn off = gain weight Depends on What and how you eat - eating unhealthy food and eating behaviour Physical activity - modern facilities cut connection between human beings the healthy way of life style for example; car and elevators
3.Medical treatments and health care problems-some medicine and disease are prone to have weight gain as complications. Such as Cushing's syndrome or hypothyroidism and taking certain antidepressants or corticosteroids. 4. Genetics Factors- obesity doesn’t solely depend on genetics make up because we can manage our lifestyle to lose weight.
Negative Effects of Obesity 1. All-causes of death (mortality)High blood pressure (Hypertension) 2.High LDL cholesterol, low HDL cholesterol, or high levels of triglycerides (Dyslipidemia) 3.Type 2 diabetes 4.Coronary heart disease 5.Stroke
6.Gallbladder disease 7.Osteoarthritis (a breakdown of cartilage and bone within a joint) 8.Sleep apnea and breathing problems 9. Low quality of life 10.Mental illness such as clinical depression, anxiety, and other mental disorders4,5 11. Body pain and difficulty with physical functioning
How to diagnose obesity? 1.BMI (Body Mass Index ) BMI result <18.5 = underweight Between 18.5 to 24.9 =Normal weight Between 25.0 to 29.9 = overweight Between 30.0 to up = very overweigh
2. Blood tests. - may include a cholesterol test, liver function tests, a fasting glucose, a thyroid test and others.
Prevention of Obesity 1.Eat less “bad” fat and more “good” fat 2. Eat less processed and sugary foods 3.Eat more servings of vegetables and fruits 4.Eat plenty of dietary fiber 5.Focus on eating low–glycemic index foods
6.Take daily physical activity 7.Incorporate a weight training regimen 8.Focus on reducing daily stress 9.Avoiding emotional eating 10. Eat the nutrients by calculating its amount ( should not be more than 2500 calories per day)
How is obesity treated ? -losing 10% of body weight can make different for health -make long term treatment plan with physician or nutritionist -Take weight loss medicine which is prescribed by doctors -Bariatric surgery:may be an option if patients haven’t been able to lose enough weight to improve their health or keep from gaining back the weight they lost with other treatments. (linked with type 2 diabetes) -weight-loss device -intermittent fasting
